Default Stereotypes

Hi

I'm interested in the stereotypes of Oxford Colleges (not the Uni as a whole).

Firstly, 'cause I find it quite funny, what are the stereotypes of the different colleges?

But, mainly - is there any truth in these? I know stereotypes are usually wrong and generalising, but there can be an element of truth in them.

For example - is there a more significant number of LGBT at Wadham than other colleges, is Merton actually more 'geeky' than others?

Also, does it seem that people actively (knowingly, or unknowingly) play up to these stereotypes, thus perpetuating them?

Thanks for any comments - I find this really interesting.

Teddy hall - rugby
Worcester - ducks
Corpus - no one's ever met anyone from there. Tends to be muddled with Oriel
Wadham - probably not as gay as one'd expect. Magdalen's much gayer and has some massive gaybudget which goes into lots of pizza and for a fancy dinner with the gay tutors. Some LGBT students do apply to Wadham and Hilda's because of both the gay rep, & the more laid-back liberal atsmophere rep. Teddy hall & pembroke also seem to have a large contingent.
Merton and Hilda's - Get the most stick, with some people utterly believing the stereotypes. both probably get sick of rubbihs jokes.
PPHs - religious freaks
St. Johns - rich
St. Peter's - paupers
Trinity - lawn
Keble - sportyish
Balliol - politics
ChCh - prettyboy toffs

I heard this stereotype too. They even conceded it at Balliol during the Open Day.

Everyone says Merton's full of workaholics and nobody cares about anything other than academia, but I'm sure that's not true. At least, I bloody well hope not, based on my work ethic over study leave so far...

Oh, and Corpus people just aren't known outside of Corpus and it tends to be forgotten about; at least, that's the impression I get (I'll find out more if I get in!)

The only things I can think of that came from Corpus are Gail Trimble, and The Monk's Passage. Someone from Corpus pick which they want for their stereotype?

Their stereotype is being full of rahs. Completely untrue, I should think, but that's what they're known for!

Hehe no problem with that, ridiculously posh people amuse me. Trying to smother laughs at interview when people would say things like "Which school did you go to?" "Oh yes we sail against them." to each other was great fun.

Mansfield is sufficiently small and new as to lack a stereotype

During the open days when looking around the Oxford Union we bumped into someone from Brasenose - he said it was largely conservative (said with, let's be honest, quite a posh voice). At Balliol the guy there warned us about it because it was 'right wing'...!
They were just two opinions though so I'm sure it's fine realllly

I'm sure stereotypes are reinforced a bit due to certain people applying because they feel they will "fit in more".

That said, there are bound to be people of all types at every college.

Particularly because applications get shuffled around a fair bit, anyway.

LMH is quite large, and I'm guessing it has a higher proportion of people sent there from other colleges, so there'll hopefully be a good mix...

Well Mansfield is a common college for people to be reallocated to, so the mix should be good, although it's obviously smaller than LMH.
