Re: What can you do with a philosophy degree?
I find it funny how people taking science degrees are deriding philosophy when every day they put the teachings of Karl Popper and Imre Lakatos into practise without even realising why they're doing it. They simply follow the dogmatic process without questioning, haven't you ever wondered why you create falsification statements and how you deduce through critical rationalism? I'm begining to think that Thomas Samuel Kuhn was right, people really are just working within paradigms.

Don't worry too much about what the figures say, they aren't particularly reliable. The stats that unis tell you are often taken from grads 6 months after they leave uni when loads of people aren't working yet so they don't really reflect what grads actually do in the long run. With a history and literature degree from Manchester you're in as good a position as anyone. -
Re: What can you do with a philosophy degree?
The primary concern of the philosopher is the truth. To hell with mundane things like a graduate job whatever that is when it is at home.
Philosophy gives you the skill to examine life and understand how little we really know. It hones your argument skills and challenges one's perceptions of reality. You learn about such interesting thinkers that changed history with their ideas. For those interested more in acquiring Truth rather than Wealth or Power, it is incredibly satisfying and fulfilling. The ancient Greek philosophers viewed the activity of contemplation as the highest and most rewarding of pursuits.
Practically speaking, it can lead to academic teaching, writing, research in Philosophy. It is also an excellent precursor to a Law Conversion or just about any other field of study. After philosophy you can think your way through any damn thing at all! If you feel you may have an aptitude and desire to do a Philosophy degree, I urge you to do it. It is a life changer and an excellent academic subject. It is not however for the faint hearted because it will shake your perceptions. The beauty of Philosophy is that the search for Truth will lead eventually to Wisdom which leads to real Freedom.
Sincerely, Best wishes with whatever you decide to do in the future and my apologies for the very long diatribe.
