Hi

can someone please explain how differentiating cos(y/2) gives -0.5sin(y/2) i dont understand where the half comes from?

Basically you multiply by the coefficient of whatever's in the brackets. Let

u = \dfrac{y}{2}

and use the chain rule to find out why.

thank you, what about if you were integrating with something in the brackets?

You divide by the differential of the bracket instead of multiplying.
