I thought it was relevant as it is subject to review next month [July 09] so I thought it would be interesting to see what people think ahead of the review.

Don't be a fool. Everyones blood should just be tested before donating, gay men included, then it would be fine.

I understand why they say because there is a high risk but there's such a shortage atm I think it would be easier to just test the blood. This might cost a bit but then it would stop people dying. Just I had 16 units and had to get loads I knew to replace it all! With only 5% of the eligible poluation actually donating blood, they could do with lifting it just so it gets some media attention and spreads the word. Making it mandatory would be better though.

The reason for this exclusion rests on specific sexual behaviour (such as anal and oral sex between men), rather than the sexuality of the person wishing to donate. There is, therefore, no exclusion of gay men who have never had sex with a man nor of women who have sex with women.

Also, they're the NHS. They must think it's a valid reason to stop blood donations as they need a lot of blood. They know what's best, don't want to give anything nasty to the recipient of the blood.

If it was just because of their sexuality I would say no but because of the reason they gave then I think it's quite justified.

"Gay" is more a colloquial term. The NHS isn't going to use colloquialisms in formal documents is it now? Use your head dear boy.

In answer to the thread: I think their blood should just be tested like everyone else's- surely the fact that they have sex with other men doesn't mean they contract super forms of HIV/syphilis etc which can bypass the tests?

It's not just gays/MSMs. You can't donate if you have paid ever for sex or injected yourself.

There's not that many 'MSMs' though, and considering the actual number of people who give blood (1 in 20), if the same proportion of MSMs gave blood it wouldn't make that much difference, statistically.
