Firstly, there is no typical or "right" profile; every applicant is unique (yes, i kno that sounds corny  )

But anyway, I applied to msc fin+econ with msc fin as 2nd choice and i got my 1st choice:
-1.1 in fin econ from uni ranked around 30th
-no directly relevant work exp
-strong references and PS (or so i like to think :yep: )
-gre: 780Q/540V/5.5AW

Take my word: the WHOLE application matters. Dont think that just becuz u got good grades or gmat ur guaranteed entry!

I got in (Fin & Econ 2nd choice) with
+ MSc in Econ with Distinction from a good UK university
+ OK GRE (790/550/4.5)
+ Very strong references

Also as a mature person I think I benefited somewhat from the ability to write a decent personal statement, but I don't think this was an important factor.

On the other hand,
- I have no relevant work exp whatsoever
- I have a weak Bachelor degree (not impressive GPA, no good math/quant. courses)

msc finance 1st choice (got a conditional offer - need to get a first in my degree)
- first in engineering degree from top 5 uk uni
- relevant experience but in small firms (ie not big ib's)
- strong references and PS (i guess)
- GRE 800Q/600V/6AW
