Yes, it's happened before. New Alcuin, new Vanbrugh...

New Vanbrugh wasn't 600 people tho was it? Didn't they get to stay in shared rooms or something similar?

Fairly sure it was the Hilton. The shared rooms fiasco was due to more people getting their offers than the Uni had budgeted for and running out of rooms.

I'll be abroad on result day, do you know we get the password online or through post?

Could probably ring up and get it over the phone.

this is probably a bit odd, but does all of the accomodation have decent kitchens and ovens? I really like home cooking. :p:

Depends on your definition of decent. all accomodation has enough to cook with, some are better equipped than others though.

Hmm, probably the bigger & more appliances the better. I bet all the best kitchens are with the en-suite accom. saving up time.

Which is the best college for chances to meet people? I don't want to end up in a place where you only really see about 5 people because locked off floors or anything. I want to be able to go to the kitchen and see plenty of people.

Most of the old buildings have no internal door locks between flats, so Derwent and Langwith.

Do the locks severely limit meeting people?

They have windows so you can still wave through the corridor doors.

I wouldn't say severely, it prohibits just wandering into other flats, you have to ring the doorbell and get someone to let you in. I wouldn't say it's major.

I'm not a huge party guy or anything, I just like meeting new people so don't want to be too restricted plus the more people around the more likely you'll find someone you like!

From my experience, if you want to meet new people (and don't want to constantly be knocking on doors) go somewhere with a decent square footage of common rooms etc per person. You do get to know people from your corridor/flat, but common rooms are where the almost inexhaustible supply of approachable new people is at.

I have to say from my experience we have found it a huge problem. I'm currently in Alcuin accomodation where we live 12 to a flat and we have found it difficult to socialise with the other 2 floors. This is mainly due to doorbells being broken and even then, when you resort to banging on doors nobody comes to answer them. Sadly some of us don't even know who lives on the other floors.
If socialising is your priority then I would definitely recommend the non-ensuite accomodation. What it may lack in facilities, it definitely makes up for in meeting people and generally having fun!

Have you informed the porters? They were pretty swift and fixing ours when it broke (Alcuin Block M)

It really isn't :p:

Langwith all the way, they have a shiny new bar, that or Goodricke, as there's new accommodation on the new campus that should be done for next year, or else anyone meant to be living in it will end up in hotels for a bit

Don't listen to slugs, he fails really quite hard.

Vanbrugh is probably the best college in the world as it happens

Dammit...I'm not safe anywhere :frown:
The system has changed since I applied a few years ago, but I still think can be useful.

You are not allocated a college based on your subject. I was allocated a college based on my application specifics (i.e. I requested a quiet college so I could study, and I ended up in Halifax; which was quiet, but because of this it was miles from the action on main campus). I was not directly asked which college I would like, as far as I can recall. This seems to have changed though.

What you will find is that some colleges are better for certain things than others; but they are all pretty good on the whole.

Arguably Goodricke has always had the best college spirt; but the flats were falling to pieces. It is being moved to the new campus development, Hes East, and shiny new flats, for the new academic year, so it will have the newest buildings for the 09/10 intake.

Alcuin is one of the shiniest and newest colleges, with plenty of en suits; but it is also quite pricey. It's also close to the library and slightly separate-feeling from teh main body of campus.

Wentworth is the graduate college. You won't be placed in here unless you are a graduate student. Nice college though with a good bar.

Vanbrugh has scattered and mixed accommodation. Some is quite old, like old Goodricke, while some is newer than Alcuin. It's pretty central on campus.

Langwith is pretty old, but still ok. It has the new Student Union bar in it (the courtyard) so if that's what you like it's worth a look.

Halifax is the biggest college, and a bit of a walk to campus. It's not pleasant to walk there in the dark, down a path over the rugby pitches with minimal lighting.

James is pretty shiny and new, and is about to inherit Goodrickes old bar and common room(s), so it will have the social facilities is has been lacking until now.

Derwent is older, but still nice. It has what is debatably the best bar, which hosts the popular campus event Big D, so it can get noisy around these times.

All colleges can suffer from the attentions of ducks. I know a few people with ground floor rooms wo are woken up by ducks tapping on the window asking for food.

Also, certain colleges are noisier than others because of their position; for example Goodricke can get a bit noisy, as well as Derwent and Vanbrugh around the times of events.

Hope this is useful x
