Default Teaching/Education Books

I'm looking to buy a book about contemporary educational issues/discussions/theories, etc, not necessarily about 'how to teach' but something a bit wider.
I am genuinely interested in Education and would just like to know a bit more. I did Sociology at A-Level, and the Sociology of Education is quite interesting, but I don't know if that would really help.

I imagine you need to buy these kinds of books on PGCE courses, but I'd like to read one now.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?

i am selling all my pgce books on ebay. starting at 99p, most wont go for more than a couple of quid. most of them are how to teach though. the few i have that are slightly more theory based are called

learning to teach in the secondary school, (core pgce text) and a few subject specific ones.

then a couple on inclusion - you might find reading about that kind of stuff interesting. the ones i know of are

making inclusion work for children with dyspraxia
thats the way i think (dyspraxia and dyslexia explained)
