Default Sheffield University Open Day

Did anybody else go today? What was your overall impression?

It was my first University open day but i have to say I was absolutely blown away, some of the buildings were just amazing such as the information commons. Not knowing what to expect I went to the accommodation tour and the accommodation there is just of a brilliant standard. My economics talk however, was basically just the lecturer telling us what we'd be doing, is this all that normally happens? However the course also seemed very intresting.
Just wanted to know what peoples first impressions were?

oh sorry to hear about that!
we were basically told about recent projects sheffield university had been doing such as finding out for hte department of health the responsiveness of different types of alcohol consumption to prices income and advertising expenditure, so basically price elasticities at work. then he talked us through the degrees we can do and said while its fine to do a dual degree containing two completely different subjects such as french and economics, its probably better to do two subjects which have some crossover such as geo/eco.
year 1 we do economic analysis 1/2 and maths methods for 1/2 and in the dual degrees 2 modules in another subject. year 2, we do micr/macro economics and two options, options range from research methods, economics of education etc. and econometrics. year 3 you do 3 economics and 3 modules in other subjects. theres quite a lot of options to do in unit 3 such as labour/monetary/health economics. if youre doing a dual i think you do less economics options and replace them with your second subject.
he then talked about studying abroad and the facilities at sheffield.
35-40 hours a week workload, 10 contact hours, 25-30 private study. youll get a personal tutor who you meet once a term and a mentor from the years above.
he then basically said where all the students have gone and what theyre doing.

sorry about the waffle, if i havent explained something well just let me know

thats all right! he said a lot of people have that reaction but its basically working a 9-5 week and then having weekends and evenings off, and not that dissimilar to school, which i suppose is true. I did sort of doubletake at first as well ha.
yer he said theres nothing wrong with it, just it might be abit harder to study two completely seperate areas, but no problem if youre willing to put effort in.
im planning economics with geography, maybe economics with sociology

I was helping with the coaches at accomodation! May have seen some of you!
Glad you were impressed I think some of the stuff here is way above what I have seen at other Unis. I've been living in Howden one of the en-suite apartments and have had the most fantastic year too.

I think subjects do tend to just talk about what you study as alot of it is getting a feel for the course etc.

I didnt get a chance to look around Howden, I do think its too much money for me. Is that near the Edgecliffe places? It's good to hear when people who have been had a good time, its one thing the lecturers telling us you do but another when we know
what do you do at sheffield?

Erm Howden is opposite the Edge yes, its one of the self-catered ensuite sets of apartments.
Where did you look in the end then? Stephenson?

I'm studying English and History and LOVING every minute of it. Coming to sheffield was definitely the right choice for me
