http://www.johnlewis.com/231297502/Product.aspx should I just buy this bad boy now?

its a good option
Hey guys, I need a laptop for medical school, something that will last me about 5 years and has good battery life. Only for normal use- I'm not a gamer. And I don't want to spend more than £450.

How are these two laptops for my needs?

Seems you're in the same boat as me. I think this should suit your needs:

I've decided to go for that one and I think it's a good deal. It's basically £400 because of the £50 cashback.

Er they're pretty much the same price because of the cashback and my one has better specs. Also you just told me to buy the Samsung a few posts back...
If you had to choose between an Asus or Toshiba with essentially the same specs, which would you choose?

I would go for the cheaper one! But you could also base you decision on looks (or maybe go get a feel in a local store and see which is more comfortable)

Haha thanks. There's only about a 50p difference so I can't decide based on price, or that would be a pretty easy way out of the dilemma. And they look basically the same too..

I like the Asus better and it comes with a free bag, but my dad is convinced a Toshiba would be better and I guess if I buy that from John Lewis it has their 2-year warranty.

However I don't think I can afford a laptop for another month or so (:frown:) so will have to see which one is cheaper then.

I have an asus myself (actually typing this in the asus), its already old (about 4 years or so) but my laptop is runs fine! apart from the slight noise and extra heat, i got nothing to complain really... considering this is a really old laptop
I need a laptop for uni, reliability is pretty important and it needs to be able run 3-4 programs at once without struggling or lagging too much. Max budget is £400 but would rather spend less. Also i want buy if from an actual shop so its easy to take back if theres any problems.

Found these so far, is the better processor worth paying £400 for?

You'll get the most bang for your buck from the i5 in the Acer, it's quite a good price.

I've found a really good Asus X52F deal. It looks perfect for me. Except apparently the wireless standard is only b/g according to the specs on the website. Does anybody know if all X52F laptops have the 'n' wireless standard or not? Maybe somebody owns one of them? It's the only thing stopping me from buying it and it is fairly urgent. I've googled it and some X52F laptops are listed with b/g/n and some with b/g. They also seem to differ in their card readers as well but seem identical in specs apart from that. It's so confusing.

Honestly, I wouldnt bother much with the wireless standard. If you dont plan going beyond casual internet browsing or gaming the b/g card should do its job.....
also an option would be you buy the laptop and then upgrade to b/g/n if the need arises

Really? I'm planning on streaming videos through iPlayer and stuff like that and I'm worried it wouldn't be good enough. Is it easy to upgrade to b/g/n? Or would I have to tear open my laptop or use up a USB slot?

normally it would be as simple as adding ram... just open a little compartment under the laptop.
also i think the normal wireless card can handle iplayer in SD, even b/g.... not 100% sure about HD, but I think it should be able to handle that 2

Is acer reliable? I was reading online and a lot of people saying acer breaks easily.... :s-smilie:

Yes they're reliable. My one runs fine. I saw graph a while back that displays percentage of breakdowns for the main laptop manufacterers' and there was only a 10% discrepency over the entire range for a 3 year period i.e most laptops are as reliable as any other brand (breakdowns on all brands ranged from 15-25% and would you believe the so called reliable apples, sony and lenovo's where actually near the top end of that scale?). I should probably point most people only write reviews when they're pissed off and that the majority of people who have no trouble with laptops don't bother. Get the acer if it has the better specs.

Get this one if you can - http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5750G_1091432.html

I've yet to see any laptop that offers an i5 2410m and a gt 540m graphics for under £500 brand new like this one does. At most you might get an i5 and possibly and weaker gt 525m for just over £500 from dell.

I have this laptop - it's frikking brilliant and looks much more sexy close-up when you can see the textured panels and plating. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ES1CyghhoQ

a video so you can see the laptop aesthetics better.

Just wondering about your thoughts on this laptop: Packard Bell i5, 3gb ram, 500gb hardrive .

It looks like a good deal, but I'm a little concerned about the reliability of Packard Bell laptops. Would it be better to get e.g. a dell inspiron which is more reliable and has 4gb ram but is i3 as opposed to i5? Or is processing power more important than ram and reliability? Many thanks in advance

Specs are good for the price, but they are a Packup Bell.
I personally wouldn't buy one.

So are Packard Bell just not very reliable then? Going back to my previous question, do you think processing power is more important than ram and reliability (specifically i5 3gb ram Packard Bell vs i3 4gb ram Dell)? Cheers.
