Default Moving from GCSE Maths to AS Level C1 module maths

Hey, just wanted to know:
[ESPECIALLY MEAN EDEXCEL C1 MODULE AS LEVEL]
How difficult did you find module C1 (in AS level maths) compared to GCSE Maths?

What grade did you get in C1 module and did you do the exam in January? If so, how much revision do you think you did for the C1 module up until you had to take the exam in January?

What books did you find helpful to revise from if you're one of the people who got a grade A in the C1 module maths AS level exam?

Was the transition from GCSE Maths to C1 module AS level maths hard/difficult? or easy or the same difficulty as with GCSE (when you did GCSE)?

Have you looked at past papers for C1? It looks rather GCSE friendly, I dare say. It seems to me to be buliding a little bit more on what we've already been taught, as prep for the other, harder modules. I wouldn't be too worried. And yes, I'm talking specifically about Edexcel, as that's what I'm taking next year, coming from AQA GCSE Maths. Hope that's useful.

C1 isn't hard at all. Apart from the last two chapters, which are incredibly easy, it's pretty much all GCSE stuff.

I sat C1 in year 11, and got 95/100 with almost no revision at all.

C1 is A* GCSE work and a little bit more work that's not that much harder than A* GCSE work.

To answer your questions:

I got an A and did the exam in January. I must of done about 4 past papers and a few textbook questions (about 8hrs then)

I used the Heinemann Revise for C1 book.

The transition was surprisingly smooth. It's really the same difficulty as A* GCSE work.

edit: Although, some of the things like when they ask you to differentiate (x2+5x-3)/(2x0.5) are hard.

I did the move from AQA GCSE to AQA AS level.

The move was hard! Only because I forgot everything over the summer holiday...

I soon got back into the swing of things though!

But it's not too bad - I did lots of past papers and revision. Came out with a lovely 95/100.

C1 is most probably going to be the easiest maths module you will take in AS/A2 Maths.

Only a little bit tougher than GCSE A/A* maths questions - and you only have to learn basic differentiation, intergration and some stuff on arithmetic series, but the rest is pretty simple stuff.

However, don't be put off if you're not getting 95%+ in the first month of sixth form - i wasn't reaching that until Nov/Dec . Although C1 is an easy module, you'll find out that at times you'll make silly mistakes that could cost you a few marks especially as its a non-calculator paper.

I did OCR. A lot of C1 duplicated GCSE maths (surds, quadratics etc) so it was fairly easy to move from GCSE to A-level. I did the exam in January and got 96%. I found the best way to revise was to spend a few weeks before the exam doing lots of past papers to get used to the style of questions you would be asked.

I did Edexcel C1 in January of year 11 (did GCSE Maths in year 10) and I found it easy then.

The Heinemann books are the best for Maths, if you do as many questions as possible from the C1 book then you should be able to get an A grade.

The transition wasn't too hard, I thought that C1 was more straightforward than the GCSEs anyway since it was just answering Maths questions rather than writing down explanations.

ooh k, so you think I will only need one maths textbook (heinman one) to get an A in C1 module maths? And also, did you get a grade A and if so, what UMS mark, if you don't mind me asking?

I was also wondering whether you had a link to the heinman book front cover image or amazon page for the exact heinman C1 book you used?

Thanks so much for posting
& Also, everyone else: thanks for the posting too! - many of your responses have been very helpful thanks

You will find most of the work in C1 straightforward, and the differentiation/integration becomes easy after practice. Solving quadratics and relating them to inequalities is probably the most tricky bit, I would say. But if you sketch a graph you'll do fine.

I got 100% in January, and that was a tougher paper than usual. I rule.

Yeah the one textbook should be fine Coupled with exam papers it should help you get your A grade. Although if you feel that you need extra practice then buying extra books could help too The textbook I used was this one => http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mathematics-...ef=pd_sim_b_13 but it could be outdated now, I'm not sure.

I did get an A in year 11 (82), that was the 1st time I sat the paper but because I wanted a higher mark for the paper I resat the exam and got 99 when I sat the exam in Lower 6th.

I found c1 easier because I was so prepared for it. Honestly, it's only slightly harder than GCSE and you get months and months to practice.

Oooh okay thanks for the link to the textbook Wow those are good marks! May I ask though, what did you do differently in terms of revision when you re-sat the paper in sixth form in comparision to in yr 11? Any new textbooks, revision techniques or exam techniques you used for the second time?

Is all you did basically heinman book and past papers? Is that really the only thing you need to do? I was just thinking there would be more somehow due to how much people complain about A level lool.. but it's good if it's not too much work Thanks very much for your help! I will be giving you positive rep in 1 second

I didn't do any maths for almost 18 months and got 96/100 in C1 with around 4 months of preperation - but it took around 2 months to "click" and for me to start understanding things (I imagine that 2 months figure would be lower had I started it straight from GCSE)

the trick is just to do lots and lots of practice questions and past papers

C1 is basically gcse maths + differentiation. There's little to no jump in difficulty, it's just slightly different i found. As long as you do plenty of past papers and ask about anything you're unsure about it should be fine. I did it in january- (ocr, so i know nothing about edexcel im afraid), and got 100% ()

Well the teachers taught us the material in class in year 11 and in Lower 6th. We spent about 3 or 4 months on C1 in year 11 but only about 4 weeks on C1 in Lower 6th since we were the Further Maths class. (thanks for the rep too )

Well I didnt do Edexcel, I did OCR MEI, but I dont think that makes much of a difference. I got an A at GCSE's but ended up with 87/100 for C1 which I sat in January by doing zilch work, I think I did 1 past paper the day before and that was it!

If you are awake 10% in your C1 lessons you should be able to get an A
