Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around?I know, I still don't know what to make next. Too much I want to do! I'm just going to buy everything I need in bulk to keep me out of the fabric shop buying new things before I'm done!(Original post by vander Beth)
That's a pretty dress... so much to do this summer, so little time. -
Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around?
I got a computerised sewing machine for my 21st birthday lol but haven't used it much yet. I'm working on a competition entry at the moment (don't expect to win or anything though hehe), so I'll post when I've finished it
I'd love to make my own clothes, especially dresses and skirts, so we'll see :-)
Not many young people seem to do that anymore, but that's probably because clothes are so cheap(primark) and fabric is quite expensive
Where do you guys get your fabric from? Any (cheap) recommendationS?! -
Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around?I usually get my fabric from my local shop which is pretty expensive, however I have recently discovered www.fabricland.co.uk which seems very reasonable in price. They are a very 'basic' shop, (they looked kinda unprofessional, spelling mistakes, dated website etc). I have heard only good things about them in other sewing circles! I messaged them the other day about finding a good heavyweight cotton for a dress and they sent me some samples completely free of charge without question! I'm going to be placing a big order with them when I get back from holiday, the cost of their fabrics makes up for the £8.50 basic postage they charge.(Original post by ferret123)

Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around? Thanks, there's some pretty cheap fabric on there (even though the site looks like it was made by a colourblind 6 year old :-/ lol) - let me know if they deliver(Original post by fran.ha)

I love that website.

Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around?
I'm going to put in my huge order (approx £50 of stuff, wanna get stocked up!) at FabricLand today! Also, I really really want to make my own dress form using the draping method, but I can't find anyone who won't think I'm insane to help me! I might got to B&Q and get the stuff today...

Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around?
I just put my order in at FabricLand, they were really nice on the phone, was a bit scary having to give my details over the phone but I've heard they are a reputable company and its not like I've got enough money for them to steal anyway! It should be here in a few days hopefully!

Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around?I'll do a list(Original post by vander Beth)
Get anything pretty?

4-way stretch suiting in black (for my tuxedo dress)
5 metres of white polycotton for draping/toiles
For the dressing gown I'm making I got silk for the majority and this georgette for the big bell kimono sleeves:
Spoiler:Show
Teal silk:

Georgette:

For an obi style belt/cummerbund I'm planning on making I got this cotton and red polycotton for little flowers I'm going to make to go on it:
Spoiler:Show

Got these two fabrics, just 2 metres because they are so pretty and I'm going to make something out of them, don't know what yet! 2 metres should be enough to make a nice top or a simple short dress.
Spoiler:Show

Also got 4 metres of this because it was only 60p a metre!
Spoiler:Show
Got these two for a skirt (blue will be the majority and then a red contrast band)
Spoiler:Show

So yeah a lot of stuff for a lot of projects! Shoud be able to get at least a few dresses or bags or tops out of it all! -
Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around? That yellow one is very pretty and delicate (and cheap!).(Original post by fran.ha)

Make sure to post pictures of the tuxedo dress. I haven't heard of that kind of dress before and am interested of what yours will look like. -
Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around? Its not something 'real' its something that I have come up with and have started referring to it as such! Simple going to make a black dress and attach a tuxedo style bib on the front. I got the idea from Threadbanger's video on how to make a fake tuxedo bib and thought it would look really cute on a black dress.(Original post by vander Beth)

Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around?
Just a quick note (I've been posting way too much on here recently) I just found a goldmine in the loft of old fabrics! Despite the fact my Mum seems to have a passion for ugly Christmas jumper patterned polar fleece and purple translucent velvet there was some great stuff in there! I even found a whole roll of ivory dupion silk! Ok so probably not great for dresses but good for tops, probably about 10 metres! And I found a whole host of buttons and zips, and a few dodgy patterns, but still! Excited! Also found some navy corduroy which I'm going to use to make some little dungaree things for my soon-to-be baby cousin who will be born in November

Also: Old t-shirt into gathered neck top, took about 20 minutes.

Well done on the feature :-) -
Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around?
Ooh! *Sticks hand up* When I was younger, I used to hand-sew clothes for my barbie dolls! I used to sew them directly onto the doll so I could never take them off without cutting it...xD
But now I've been sewing (on a machine this time) clothes, I recently made my own prom dress actually, and I won best dress xD
I make my own patterns though...ready-made ones scare the shizzles out of me xDLast edited by Utopian Princess; 07-07-2009 at 13:08. -
Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around?Ooh you can be my expert for advice when I make a blanket for my new cousin then! I'm planning on making a nice little baby set of dungarees, a hat, a fleece, a blanket and a toy in coordinating fabric to give to my Auntie as a nice 'starter' set!(Original post by Clarky-x)
I'm an absolute master at making cushions and blankets due to 2 years of fashion and textiles at school!
Just finished my new vintage style swim dress for my holiday on Saturday. I still may not have the figure for it but its a lot more flattering than most of the other swimwear I've seen on the high street...

Re: Any sewers/dressmakers around?
I haven’t touched a sewing machine or a needle since I was in year 9. However recently I’ve really wanted to create some clothes of my own. No idea how that will go though but it’s always been something I’ve wanted to teach myself. Any tips on how I can get started?
