Also, what is it with people blaming you personally for the price of things? Yes a vodka and coke costing £5.20 is ridiculous, but please don't yell at me when I'm already getting abuse from customers that can't understand that I can't serve everyone at once!
This one annoys me too X_X Yes, charity shops are typically more lenient with prices, but that doesn't mean I'm going to sell someone an £8 coat for £3! I get customers complaining too because of it, especially about books. I'm certain that one woman asked me about the prices of books solely so she had someone to shout at. I agree that the prices are a bit high, but they're set by head office, not by us. She was screeching "TWO POUND! TWO POUND!".

I always tell customers that the prices are as advertised because I know that I shouldn't tell people that they can have something for cheaper. However, many people think that they're somehow entitled to buying these things for cheaper than advertised for a variety of reasons ("It's only for charity..." "I'm old" etc).

On an unrelated note, I like friendly banter, but not when it blatantly turns into nasty comments. A woman was having a laugh with me and a co-worker, but then it turned into her insulting both of us repeatedly. Found out a few weeks later that she'd been arrested for stealing from dementia patients.

It annoys me when customers complain solely because I don't know the football scores on a Saturday. I'm running in and out of the shop floor constantly, doing work where I'm not focusing on the radio, etc. And yet I'm somehow "incompetent at my job" because I don't know the scores. Granted, I'm not into football, but I try to keep track of the scores when I can. However, when I can't, I apologise, but it's still not enough. X_X I've started asking the other co-worker usually on the floor, although there's often times where it's only me on the shop floor.

That is expensive :lolwut: but it is weird that people hold you personally responsible for prices especially when they can see you punching the various drinks in to an electronic till that automatically places the price up for each drink.
Pint of Magners is £4, I would never buy from there! It happens more you than you think, I even show them the receipt and they still seem to think i'm plucking prices from middair

where is this? I'm from London and I've never been charged that much for a vodka and coke, even at gig venues
At a racecourse in the North West, just a shot of vodka is £3.40 there. Also a Vodka Red Bull costs £8.40! It's a lot cheaper in normal bars and clubs up here though, i think its just that racecourses are assosciated with middle/upper class so they are more likely to pay the prices.

Some old-timer threatened to come back with a gun and shoot me over the price of the beer once.

    It was only £2.90.
Wow. At least ive never been threatened! Also, these days £2.90 isnt that bad

Wow, I've never been to a racecourse yet but if I ever do go I'm not buying a drink there.

You think your prices are bad?! I have to sell vodka and coke as two separates, as in, a bottle of coke and a shot of vodka. I get people complaining that they don't want a bottle of coke, can't they just use half and charge me for that? Erm. No?! I apologise, but I don't make the rules or the prices!

I got moaned at because the kiosk that sells bottled beer was closed too. Well, I'm sorry, but if more of you had bought tickets to watch the game, it might be open, but no, I won't go and get you a bottle of beer JUST because you find it difficult to compose yourself that much to hold a pint of beer without spilling it.

I had the roulette man in tonight....

He spent half the night at the counter telling us his roulette system, "if I go 5, he go 6,7 or 8 and if I go 24 he go 22" was all that he kept saying.

So anyways, I decided to humour him and give him a demonstration £20. He swiftly lost the whole lot... then another demo £20.... then ANOTHER demo £20!

So yea, eventually he puts money in and ends up winning £40 profit. Yikes, maybe I DID miss something

    -------------

He also started arguing with a customer about how he was barred from every casino for his system and how he could beat the roulette machine. He starts randomly shouting "MAN MADE THE MACHINE" about 20 times hahaha.

    ----------

Then I had some guy who lost £4 on the gaming machine and spat on the floor. He looked like a proper scally so I just assumed he did it for a reaction so he could kick off on someone. Didn't respond to him.

    Fun times at work :p:

I'm sorry I would have asked that, as the pubs near me will sell you an individual shot of vodka if you have Coke left But I wouldn't get angry about it, at least not to the barperson...

one woman the other day asked me for "the thing with cheese in it." That could be one of about 10 things, so I told her everything it could be and she just grabbed a sandwich and went "I can't be bothered listening to you reel off everything in the shop, I'll just have this EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT WHAT I WANT." Ten minutes later she comes back in and goes "THIS ISN'T WHAT I ASKED FOR, I'D LIKE ANOTHER." Another what?? And why have you eaten the whole thing THEN asked for a refund?

Think you misunderstood, we have to sell the 500ml bottles of coke, so can't sell half of one...since my boss would get rather confused if I started telling him I have half a coke left...since that's basically waste.

& I have people asking for refunds/exchanges on food ALL the time when they've eaten/drunk half of whatever it is. The most annoying one is when they've drank half of a pint which they claim is 'off' and then get annoyed when I only exchange it for a half pint...well, if you'd drank a mouthful, it'd be a full pint, but in your quest to get drunk, you seem to have drank half a pint already!

Ah, I did misunderstand, I thought you meant they couldn't use their previous bottle of coke for a new shot of vodka. Although I thought most places had a tap anyway. I can't comment as the place I go to uses 2 litre bottles of Asda cola....

Ahh that reminds me of my first job working in a bakery/sandwich shop. This was back in the days before Subway took over the world and we were the only bakery in our town that made sandwich's to the customers specifications, anyway this very abrupt woman came in and barked a order at me, so I made her what she wanted, no problems there and then she left.

10 minutes later she came back in shouting about there being a hair in her sandwich and she wanted a refund (which is understandable) problem was the hair in the sandwich did not belong to any of the member of staff (we were all brunettes with shortish her, she was had really long platinum blonde hair...just like the one on the sandwich) and she has eaten the whole thing apart from one bite which had the planted hair on it!

We had to give her the refund with the customer always being right, but what a joke! Most of our customers were lovely though, and I got to make a sandwich for Rick Parfitt from Status Quo once (ultimate claim to fame )

I have no issues selling them a shot of vodka to put in coke they've bought previously (: I work in a sports stadium, so for ease all soft drinks are in bottles and beer is on tap...I agree it'd be so much easier and less hassle if we had all drinks on tap though! Well...for us, cause it's one less thing to count, but for the nature of the environment, bottled pop is so much easier!

Working in a Post Office today wasn't good...

Customer: "£2.70! I paid £1.48 for that on Saturday!"

Well, get with the times pal, not my fault the prices have gone up! The amount of times I heard this today was infuriating...

Customers are rude, arrogant, cheeky and think they're always right - that's the jist of the comments I've read
The reason: coz they pay your wages and expect a certain level of service - that's why you're there at the end of the day
You won't change the customers - change yourself, or find another industry
    Oh my God.

That level of service does not include being a punch bag for verbal abuse and being made to do things that are a) illegal and b) not within your power. I will always do my best to help a customer but if they are rude and abusive, I think they are in the wrong. Not me.

Why should people endure other people's nastiness and bad mannors just because they need to eat and put a roof over their heads? The key word here is service- being polite, helpful and competent, not boot licking, bowing and scraping, and accepting abuse.
