Feeling the simmering resentment from theatre staff at yet another bunch of newbies shows up and doesn't know how to work the scrub machines/get into the changing rooms etc. It is not our fault that the last trainees didn't give back their locker keys.

How are the TSR babies getting on?
Apt turn of phrase - tomorrow I start a weekend of being the Obs SHO. Urgh, whole weekends again.

Though the senior partner at my leaving lunch on Tuesday did enjoy telling us of the days she got called to do home deliveries & GP covered birthing centres/midwife units..!

I fear 'assisting' is going to be more of the involved variety than being a scrubbed medical student - so will need to start honing my anti-fainting skills again & the whole set-up of areas I cover out of hours sounds fiendishly complicated (a Labour Ward, Maternal Care Unit for ante and post natal patients and a Maternal Assessment Unit for walk ins).

What's a scrub machine? Ah yes, I should have asked about lockers...

& added buying clogs in advance to my pre-changeover-to-do-list as finding a matching pair of Size 7s in the women's changing rooms that aren't owned always turns out to be harder than you might think. Wonder what the quality of my £9 ebay 'new without box' ones is going to be! At least they're pink...

Special scrub-dispensing machine that is swipe-card operated, apparently in order to prevent theft. Just a bit worried that mine might not be enabled yet...

There are also cupboards full of communal shoes, though they're not swipe card-able yet, so we'll see if there are any in the right size by the time I get there tomorrow morning.

I had a horrible first day as the ENT SHO on call. It was one of the worst on-calls I have had since starting work.

I thought that I would enjoy non-resident oncalls more (they are 24 hours so you should hopefully get some sleep) but I didn't get home until after 23:00 and I then didn't sleep because I was so paranoid about sleeping through my phone (which didn't go off).

I hate new jobs I am sure I will get used to it but at the moment I am just feeling miserable about the whole thing.

Day 1 was great - really busy but left at the end of the day feeling really positive. Day 2 - not so much. Nothing major but various things left me feeling a bit crap. Hopefully day 3 will be better.

Day 1 was OK, I just got destroyed oncall today. Day was a total blur, SHO semi-reachable, millions and millions of crap jobs handed over (TTOs, warfarins with INRs not checked, regular meds to be prescribed, cannula/blood etc etc), sick patients (GI bleeder, guy in AKI/hypotensive, hyponatraemia and hypotensive), loads of crappy scans to request from the day team...

Survived my first ICU on call. Most cushy on call I've ever had tbh! I'm sure most of them will not be as nice as that one.

You get a lot of that crap in the first few on calls but once they're on the receiving end, they wise up fairly quick.

Got put in resus on my first day. Saw something fairly traumatic which I haven't been able to shake off. Glad I have the weekend to move on.

I actually loved resus, but some nasty stuff happens there. Talk it through with your consultant if it's really upsetting you.

And sorry for not being able to chat at computer training earlier!

No worries, there was a lot going on. Hopefully you had as much fun in your EPR training as I did in mine (TIC). Unfortunately can't talk to my consultant. SHO's were very kind though. I mean other SHO's. More senior ones. Oh dear i'm an SHO...

I could get to love resus, I like being where the action is and learning. Was just a rude awakening of what being back in London involves.

ITU is awesome. Drank loads of coffee whilst watching Olympics, did an intubation, went down to my old ward and wasn't patronising at all.

Second on call for ENT wasn't as bad as the first. Still stressful at the moment though. I can now pack a nose though which is a relief.

Was dead annoying, we worked like banshees to get everything done by 4 yesterday. Then proceeded to sit around for the Reg to come do a ward round at 6PM. So annoying! Didn't get out till like 7.30.

" Then proceeded to sit around for the Reg to come do a ward round at 6PM."

    Why?

I'm not sure really. We just got told by the outgoing F1s that the reg's like to do an evening ward round to check in with us (which is fair enough, I suppose). The way the service is structured is pretty odd, the consultants never do ward rounds, just the reg's. And it is usually one reg covering theatres, clinic and wards as well so things are quite rushed.

This is going to be the stupidest question on here however - do you get chance to write alot of things down even if you are busy. It didnt seem a problem for me when I did my assistantship but im being made to become increasingly paranoid that im never going to be able to write down anything and im going to forget everything. If in the remote possibility that I might ever get to start.
