I am a nurse thinking of medical school

I am six months away from finishing my nursing degree. and I am beginning to get the feeling that it might not be the right profession for. I have been working in hospital and have found being a doctor to be very appiling. However I am a bit conflicted is it wise to start thinking about going for another degree at my age (24) that could take me 5 years to attain. And also i am not sure if medical schools consider a nursing degree as an entry qualification, I hear there is stiff competition for medical school places. This just puts me off, if anyone has some information on universities that consider nursing degrees as an entry qualification. please help me

Leicester University does a four year graduate course specifically for people with healthcare degrees - I think its the only one.

Its in partnership with Warwick - where all the science graduates go.
well....in my opinion, you should go and finish off your nursing degree....then you should specialise and become a CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST........you get a good amount of salary.....plus your responsibility is like being a doctor!!! Keep an open mind about it!!! hope it helped you a tad!!!

thank you for your help being a clinical nurse specialist might not be a bad idea. This is such a difficult decision. I feel as if I am at a cross roads.

I think your number one priority should be finishing your nursing degree. There are loads of people older than you starting medicine degrees and if that's the route your truly want to go down, them i'm sure it will work out for you. with regards to age, i know someone off my course that's nearly 40 and she's cool, so 24 is still relatively young!

There are a few nurses in my year.

Finish your degree - you'll find it hard to get into medicine with an incomplete degree programme in your recent history.

As for applying - GEP medicine is more competative than running for Government ! But applying for 5 year medicine isn't as harsh. It can be done! I'm an oldie (29 - sob!) on a 5 year course - there are 53 graduates and matures in my year out of a total of 277 peeps, so it can be done!

Good luck - follow your heart, else you'll always wonder 'what if'

Mhhmm, plus having already done nursing, and reapplying to do medicnie (as apposed to going into paid work as a nurse) might show the addmissions tutors how dedicated to becoming a doctor you are.

I'm in the same boat. Six months away from being a qualified nurse, and the sinking feelung that I would rather be a doctor. I haven't got science A levels, but could get into Leicester with just the nursing degree. Otherwise I might try doing a couple of A2s in science (although my local college doesn't do them, Grrr). I'm also 24, but I don't think that's a problem, it's more trying to figure out whether to do it pre or post babies!!

It's really hard, but I tink as nurses we're well placed to understand the role of the doctor, and also have great experience in health care that othetrs won't have which could be a big advantage.

I might also try going the GAMSAT route to apply at Peninsula. It's all a bit confusing, but I think even if I can't find anywhere to do the A2s then I will invest soem serious time in some self directed learning in sciences!

Keep me posted if oyu find out anything!
