Congratulations - I have just finished my first year and i can tell you it is a great course.

As for books, there are 2 books

Psychology v. 3 by Martin, Carlson, Buskist (although Version 2 is perfectly adequate)

and

Introduction to Statistics in Psychology by Howitt and Cramer

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Introduction-Statistics-Psychology-Dennis-Howitt/dp/0132051613/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1247435258&sr=1-1

I wouldnt stress about getting them early - i didnt get them until i arrived and i did fine.

However if maths is an issue for you, you may find it worth while looking at the stats book for a few hours over the summer. There is a fair bit of stats in the course, and it really helps if you are familier with the material. I did Stats as part of my maths A level i did find that having that prior familiarity with stats was useful. It isnt hard stuff, but if you havn't done maths since GCSE, a brief refresher may save you time and stress later.

It is a great course with great lecturers, you will love it.
