I wouldn't read academic books, you're far too young to be bored with that.

Read Foreign Affairs, it's an American based journal and you can find it in WH Smith/Borders etc. Then you can pick an issue from one of the journals and discuss it critically in your PS.

Far better than saying "I have read about Realism but I think liberalism ...".

This is something of a standard introduction text in British IR courses:

Unlike many academic books it is not all that expensive. It's is a good book that will run you through most of the important theoretical and practical aspects of IR. (I know the name is a bit misleading, but it is one of the best IR intro text books)
