More like communist than socialist (same thing only more extreme).

For those who think that only poor people believe in socialism, take note that John Lennon was very appreciative of Marx & Engels. For those who 'like their right to earn money' take note that it was this 'right' - this economic model - that drove us into the current recession.

Also for capitalists, think of somebody who is smarter than most of the people out there, has more desire than anybody else out there and will not go to university because he cannot afford it. Then think about the fact that George Bush went to Yale University.

Socialist mainly, but I would allow a lot of capitalism to survive, as long as measures persist to prevent individuals from amassing huge amounts of capital. I think making money a time-limited commodity would maybe be a good idea. I'd like as much industry and services to be taken out of the control of both government and private capital and replaced with a mixture of non-profit corporations, co-operatives, and local democratic organizations. Whatever works for the particular case I guess. Things like shops, bars, restaurants, tradesmen and such could continue to operate as private capitalists I think.

I'd have the banks nationalized and used as a vehicle to fund social spending. That would be my one sovietization...

    Im a Capitalist.

Socialism only works in theory. Practically all men strive to be better and stronger than others, and since Socialism wants people to be equal that can never happen. Good in theory though.

Socialism doesn't say there should be absolute equality at all, it says money should be distributed according to work-done and desert i.e. harder worker and more skilled workers should get more. There would be less variation in wages though. I think the variation in incomes between richest and poorest in Russia was between 7 and 14 to 1. I imagine it was different at different points in the ussr's long existence though.

Even if this wasn't utter claptrap, capitalist mechanisms would still be responsible for the decades of boom previous to the current downturn. The economy is immeasurably stronger than it could ever have possibly been under a socialist/communist regime regardless of any temporary stalls in growth, and the average person is resultantly far wealthier because of it.

I wouldn't describe myself as either, really. I'm a conservative first and for most.

    Left-Capitalist.

Centralised control's a godawful idea for most things- particularly when placed in the hands of people in search of political prestige rather than actually doing a decent job. Capitalism handles things fine, so long as there's a decent system of checks in place to hold back its more destructive aspects.

Socialist. Globalisation has widened the gap between rich-poor in the world. 1 Billion hungry in the world. Capitalism has improved the lives of people who had relatively decent lives in the first place. 5% of the world control I think 50% of the worlds wealth; that percentage is slightly misleading because in effect it's the richest 2% who really control around 50% of the wealth. There's meritocracy, and then there's exploitation.

Fidel Castro and Che Guevara were both from wealthy backgrounds.

Allotting people wealth based on merit sounds great, but in order to aportion wealth fairly, we'd all have to start off on a level playing field. Would the abused, raped child be on level playing field with the golden-dummy sucking rah? Extreme case but thats black and white, and then theres miles of grey.

And Calm down, you're only a student; not chief advisor to the IMF. There are many people, a LOT smarter than you, who would disagree with you, and then there'd be a lot of smart people who'd agree with you, but for their own reasons, not for you're poncey minor first year laughable knowledge on the subject.

Yes but there are more poor people than rich/mid-class people (worldwide speaking, not referring to our little shangri-las).

Anyway, trying not to be Kantian so I'll shut up now.

i love the way so many socialists are all ''well, how can anyone deride socialism. how is a perfect world where everyone is equal and every service people need is provided free in unlimited supply and nobody ius ever poor or hungry not better than capitalism??''

of course a utopia is better than capitalism...because a utopia is by definition perfect...nothing is superior to it. the point is anyone can make up in their heads a perfect world like the socialists have....doesnt mean it would ever actually be possible

my teleporting machine is better and faster than a 747. so lets get rid of those evil capitalist 747s which take an evil capitalist 7 hours to get to the usa and everyone can use my teleporting machine free of charge. oh wait....the machine DOESNT EXIST it's a fantasy just like the dumbass socilaist utopis where apparently all amenities magically proivide themselves

simple question i'm sure. Are you a poverty creator or a wealth creator?

I'm a capitalist. A real liberal not like the crap namby pamby imitations we have today who mistook liberalism for populism. IMO socialists are outright idiots and almost always peasants.
    1. The two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive (lol, fail).
    2. The distinction between "poverty creator" and "wealth creator" is invalid.
    3. Your opinion doesn't count for much, since socialists are not "almost always peasants". I wouldn't describe the likes of Tony Benn as "outright idiots".

My view as an economics student, shared by the vast majority of fellow students i know, is that the overwhelming majority of socialists are totally economically uneducated and most people tend to become more capitalist the more they learn about economics. So, sorry but i honestly think that, although they might not be thick, the majority of socialists, when it comes to economics, are totally flawed
Anecdotal evidence is presented here. One could equally retort that, "as an economics student, a lot of people in the class favour intervention in markets - the minimum wage, the NHS, redistributive taxation, pollution permits..." For the record, I'm not a true Scotsman socialist.

i love the way so many socialists are all ''well, how can anyone deride socialism. how is a perfect world where everyone is equal and every service people need is provided free in unlimited supply and nobody ius ever poor or hungry not better than capitalism??''
