Even those charts would agree, since they based left and right on state involvement - Hitler should be on the left, just to the right of Mao and Mugabe. Eugenics is the nationalization of human breeding, therefore it's the biggest big government project, far to the left, and into the realm of socialism.(Original post by foolfarian)
I mean, look at Communism versus Facism. Both result in nigh totalitarian state, and yet we are told they are utter opposites of each other. Showing there is more to political allegiance than just left vs right. -
dont say that...the lefties will attack you!(Original post by JonD)

Not all socialist ideologies believe in a violent overthrow of the state (there is more to it than Marxism you know).(Original post by JonD)
Most strains of socialism use(d) humans to reach social salvation through the violent revolution. Inevitably, many of them would die, so it's obviously not against any core socialist principles, but a core principle itself.
Many believe it's an inevitable evolutionary state which will occur naturally without revolution...
OK, socialism mostly emerged from a violent dislike of the way capitalists treated the workers during the Industrial Revolution. The use of the workers as a means to increase profit margins with no regard for their needs, and people thought that this use of people as means to an end was wrong. This is the most basic principle of socialism in an ideological sense - fraternity is the most important ideal.
Revolution was seen as a necessary evil by some, without which socialism couldn't be implemented.
We're not discussing a spontaneous revolution of the workers here though, rather selective killing of those viewed to make a particular race (or even species) weaker.
The political persuasion of Hitler can be very well argued both ways... some would see his total disregard for human life except that contained within the Aryan race as profoundly right-wing, others argue (as you have done so eloquently) that other policies such as believing he knew what was best for the citizens of Germany and implementing that indicate a left-wing bent.
As foolfarian pointed out, left-wing and right-wing are inadequate labels, and I think the political compass et al are too - I personally regard political persuasion as a chart like the political compass ones, but cort of curved so the two extremes turn full circle (so extremists are really a mixture of both).
Basically (if you can't be bothered to decipher that I don't blame you) he's really an embodiment of the worst aspects of both sides of the argument.
btw technik, if that was aimed at me I really can't see socialism ever working in reality despite admirable principles.
