Further Mathematics A level???
Heya, I have applied to college with the following subjects : Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Further Maths. But I have heard of many Universities not accepting F.Maths as another A level if you already have Maths. I want to go into Medicine, hopefully go onto either Oxbridge or Imperial. I have contacted them but they didn't answer my question, just repeated what was on their websites, which doesn't state anything about F.Maths. My other choice instead of F.Maths would be either Fine Art or Music.
PLEEEEEEASE can someone help?!? Does anyone know what Uni's accept it as another A level, or if I should make my subject choce more diverse?
Many many thanks!!!!!!! -
Re: Further Mathematics A level???
I'd go with the diversity fine art & music gives to be honest, and you'll find having a subject that isn't science/maths to be a bit of a rest break for you too.
To quote UCL prospectus - "Those also offering a contrasting arts subject will be looked on favourably" -
Re: Further Mathematics A level???
You only need to do 4.
Anyway, for medicine, they won't regard it at all as part of an offer and it's conditions. For example, if you get an AAA offer, and you get As in biology, chemistry and further maths, and Bs in maths and physics, then you will not have made your offer.
Whether or not they take it into account at all in the application stage depends on the university.
If you change your options, music is more respected than fine art, but then again, neither of them will greatly enhance your application when you have the 4 most relevant subjects anyway.
Do the one you'll like most. With work experience and all that, you're probably going to drop one of them by the time you finish your AS year anyway.
Only take further maths if you like maths. It will not do you any favours otherwise. -

You said Music is more respected than fine art, I'm just wondering, I will already be taking part in extra cir. bands - county senior bands/orchestras etc. but I can't really show my art in an extra cir. way. I was also wondering, art may be less work than music, I can use a lot of the things from my art GCSE. However, my problem is I love both. But think I could manage an A* easier in art over music. But I'm still undecided.

Re: Further Mathematics A level???Have you decided against Further Maths then? Just to point out, if you prefer Further Maths to Music/Art, you should probably stick with Further Maths.(Original post by Scourfield)

Re: Further Mathematics A level???Nobody will care. It's the top three that matter and FMaths is not going to be one of those.(Original post by Jonty99)

If you had any sense of ethics, then you wouldn't use stuff from your GCSE.
Even if you did you'd get an E LOLOLOL. GCSE is so much easier than AS in art. You're marked much more harshly.
Do you really want to show off ECs that much?
Honestly, do universities actually care THAT MUCH?
I swear some people take this 'all-rounder' thing too seriously.
Yeah, universities might like to see that you can do more than pass exams and you can take a load of pressure (especially for medicine) but come on. When people like art and music, they don't decide to take exams to show the fact off, they do wha they want to do and not what an exam board tells them too.
Christ, calm down, you don't need to do all this!
Just take biology, chemistry, physics and maths, go make old people smile in a nursing home and apply next October, and hope for the best! -
Re: Further Mathematics A level???I know they mark you harsher, but art is a great love of mine. I sat my GCSE two years early and got 100%, the chief examiner came to speak with me and said I should've entered it for A level as I had way too much work blah blah and I would have easily gotten an A. I want to take 5, I love all of the subjects I'll take. I will have to do a lot of work experience, I'll hopefully go to a nursing home soon, in the next few weeks. I don't meant to sound at all big headed at the whole art thing, it's just maybe it would be easier than the others, I like them all equally. Ooo, another question. I know the Cambridge offer for medicine is A*AA, what if I had an A* in art and an A in both maths and chemistry, but say B's in the other two. Would I have met the offer if it was with an arts subject that I gained my top grade in?(Original post by AnonyMatt)

If you think you'd prefer Art to Further Maths, then go ahead and do it.
But if it would make you do worse in your other subjects, I don't think it would be a good idea. -
Re: Further Mathematics A level???yes a lot of people say art is easy but it does take a lot of time, work and effort(Original post by Lil' Flo)
i'd say art would be waay more work and could bring other subject down
do f.math - it fits in with math and can improve it,
btw i only did art to gcse (regretfully - most stressful in my opinion
) i certainly didnt take it to a level lol

Re: Further Mathematics A level???Even if they do share your views (which most schools don't by the way), they will count it.(Original post by Jonty99)
Well nobody will equally care about Music/Art if what you say is true, which is why I said he should do the one he prefers.
FMaths has as much status as general studies.
So your choices are fine.
