Open College of the Arts

Hi, has anyone heard of the Open College of the Arts? My mum got a prospectus for it through the post recently. Apparently it's similar to the Open University, but specialises in the creative arts. It's meant to have quite a few students but I'd never heard of it before, and I've never seen it mentioned here. The courses seem quite interesting, though. Does anybody study there or know of anyone who does?
I've heard of them, and for many people they're perfect - but I would be a little bit hesitant, simply because Art and Design is best done with other people around you - the whole enjoyment of doing a creative course comes from being part of a community, and being inspired and motivated by the people around you. I'm not sure that could happen through the post!

Hi, I've studied with the OCA (Photography and Writing). They've actually been around for two decades, but only recently seem to be gaining momentum - probably since they got their degree validated a couple of years back. I found Photography and Writing quite natural to study from home, and I've been in touch with several of their painting and textiles students that seemed to find it a surprisingly natural way to study. It's probably easier to study photography and writing from a distance due to the media being quite internet-friendly, but the students on their forum didn't seem to find it too much of a hindrance. I suppose it comes down to the simple fact that if you can go to a physical University, you would. Otherwise, the OCA does a good job of filling the gap. Their private student forum was a good source of productive debate and frequently became quite heated while I was there (far more so than I experienced at art college back in Leeds - I found that a comparatively dull and lifeless experience). I think you should look into them at the very least, just bare in mind the constraints that distance learning brings with it, as jontheartstudent pointed out.
