The only exceptions might be Oxford/Cambridge, who seem to have a preference for little rich boys/girls who are from middle/upper-class families, and will not accept you even if your grades are straight A's/A*'s, as i know working-class people who've applied with these and been rejected. So you can't deny that the people who go to these particular uni's are well-off. They might be the exception.

Plenty of counter-examples on TSR that prove the opposite

haha i'm sure there are plenty of WoW 'enthusiasts' lurking around Imperial

I doubt many of them will be medics though - so it's all good

Pretty much, when the majority of your life is spent on how to get to the next part rather than enjoying where you are.

Damn right. The clever people are those who get into decent unis without trying, and get lashed all the way through it....

Yes, the Oxbridge bit; because they're very competitive, lots of people with near perfect academic records do get rejected, and I highly doubt there's any active discrimination at work (with, for instance, both Universities trying to encourage more poorer students to apply)

But if they've started encouraging poorer students to apply, does that not imply that the majority of people who already attend the universities are wealthy? So why is that? They must have valued wealthier students over those who are more working-class once upon a time, even if they aren't now. Anyway, i'm pretty sure it's a popular opinion, even if mistaken, that those uni's are for wealthy people, so that's all i was saying. After all, the thread is asking if you associate any universities with a particular 'type' of people.

Not really; although there was a clear correlation between wealth and getting into Oxbridge, that doesn't necessarily mean there was a direct causal link between the two, and that wealth caused admission, but rather that wealthier people can go to private schools or the better state schools or are encouraged more by their parents or a whole host of other factors, which leads to them achieving better results, and thus getting into Oxford that way (although admittedly a long time ago there would inevitably have been the direct causal link you suspect, I doubt that's been happened in the last 50 years {I actually read an article in a newspaper a few weeks ago, whereby the writer was relating a story about how, as an admissions tutor for Oxford in 1948, it had been alleged that her husband had let in a working class pupil from a grammar school at the expense of a boy from an expensive private school, so these access initiatives are not as recent as you suspect})

I know working class people, some who've applied with these grades and some who haven't, who've got in :awesome:

elisabethbridge

I was talking to a girl I know. She did her undergrad at Edinburgh and is now doing a masters at Cambridge. I asked her about the common stereotype of all Cambridge students being complete snobs and very posh. She didn't agree with that, but said that the adjective she'd use to describe Cambridge students is 'competitive'. She found that a lot of people there had very high goals in life and that everyone was very competitive, and that it could be seen in all aspects of uni life from academics to sports. You know, in a way that when we took things as having a bit of a laugh in the sports club we were both members of at Edinburgh, the same club in Cambridge took things really seriously.

I'd say that most of that applies to Oxford. Though we have a laugh in our sports clubs :awesome:

Urgh, i'm not a fan of Push, some of their information is woefully out of date. Plus some of their ratings are just bizarre.
For example, they gave Newcastle a booze rating of 2 out of 5 despite it being known across the country for its quality nightlife, and gave it 0 out of 5 for both living costs and reputation! It's a Russell Group university which also happens to be in one of the cheapest areas to live in the country! As i said, bizarre.

(As a comparison, Loughborough got a booze index of 4 out of 5, despite the towns terrible nightlife)
