International Relations Help

I am going to be compiling a deferred entry for uni over the next year and would appreciate some help for applying to study International Relations.

I haven't yet received my AS results, although I have been predicted AABB (for music, media, politics & economics), and could possibly shift that up to AAAB if things go my way.

I have 2 questions:
1. Other than where I intend to apply to (Leeds, Edinburgh & Sussex), where else would be good to apply to for IR?
2. Several people I've spoken to have told me to only do IR as part of joint honours. Is that wise?

Also, any recommended reading for personal statement?

As for the joint honours question it depends on what you are thinking of thinking it with, a language is a good idea, but i would not say it is in anyway compulsory.
St. Andrews and Hull are particularly good.

St Andrews has one of the best IR programs in Europe.

That's what I've been told, but I only got a B in a GCSE Foreign Language (French), so it's generally out of the question.
