Default Oxford Curfews

I was thinking of applying to Oxford but was put off when I heard some colleges have curfews before 11pm on week nights. I even heard Merton has a 9:30pm curfew and only 3 colleges don't enforce one. I want to apply to Oxford but this has really put me off as I don't want to have to wait till the weekend to go out.

I've come in well past 3am and left earlier then 5am so the curfew would have to be a very small time window...

You've been lied to. The vast majority of colleges actually make sure that your light is out by 9pm on weekdays and 9:30pm on weekends. You are served dinner at 6pm sharp and are then escorted to study rooms for supervised learning until 15 minutes before bed time when you're permitted to use the toilet, brush your teeth e.t.c.

Some of the more progressive colleges allow male and female students to eat and study in the same room rather than separately.

One advantage of this system is that you can get a bit of extra money by working as a halls monitor (you go round making sure people's lights are out on time and there are no parties going on).

*No curfew exists in any college as far as I know. Almost all have rules about late night parties in your room, but that's a case of everyone living in the same building and general politeness and is based on noise levels.*

Actually it is true. St Anne's does not allow students to be out past 10:30pm on weeknights and 11:30 on weekends.

You perform deviant acts with the college chaplain.

Twelfty pounds an hour.

The stigma is more than made up for by the control over the blackmarket in back issues of FHM.

There are noise bans after a certain time at night, but most colleges would struggle to tell when you were going in and out of college, day or night. Equally, you're meant to sign out if you spend any night but Saturday out of your own bed - but I've never signed in or out, and again, your college would struggle to tell.

Unless you have invented time travel, curfews no longer exist

So that's why the college drama group simulated sex acts on the altar during a play!

The only place you're allowed to be if you're not in your room after 8.30pm is in the Library. At Merton, they provide beds and pillows, too.

Seriously, though - just looking on the college websites would probably tell you that you've been severely mislead. Just look in the section for current students that most of these websites have - they'll usually have a copy of the regulations for your perusal!
