It is when its my money. Abortion isn't a medical treatment, its the opposite, it doesn't give life, it takes it away

So you think the NHS should ask for your permission before authorising any medical treatment? What about the other 30 million taxpayers? Do we get to veto medical procedures too?

Abortion shouldn't be available on the NHS. In America there are 'charities' where you give money for impoverished women to have abortions. You can even specify the race of the victim

Well if it happens somewhere in the world, it must be okay.

Oh well thats different, they should be left to die on the street.

I'm kidding. Of course they should be allowed to have it too. People do not fall into drug addiction habbits without having hard times or serious problems, we should be aiming to help these people, not let them rot away because of mistakes they have made.

But you see my point hat these mental health problems are self inflicted
Unknown?
I imagine that a lot of people here would be against the idea of a fully privatized heathcare system in the UK because for some reason we think that healthcare is some right which I don't get. What makes YOU and others so special that we get free healthcare paid out from our taxes (some more than others)? I don't wish sickness on other people but I also don't see why when one day I'll be paying taxes I should be responsible for the health of others, especially when I'd rather have private insurance.

Now I don't have a heart of stone  I don't think that, for example a mother with cancer should be left untreated or anything which isn't exactly the persons fault. But if you break your leg skating then you should be given a bill after your treatment at hospital. You took the risk you pay the consequences. Same goes for people who have drinked, took drugs in their life or are obese due to them excessively eating more than they obviously need, its their fault!

I think the current level of NHS cover which the government provides should be reduced and only be used for people who actually need treatment allowing taxes to be reduced. Everyone else should just buy private cover and see that healthcare isn't some right for everyone. Its just a right because everyone says it is but what makes people so special that they deserve it? I shouldn't be expected to pay for anyones healthcare and I don't expect anyone to pay about mine. I'd much rather prefer a more american style healthcare system.

I disagree, I wouldn't want to have to take out private Heath Insurance. However, I don't understand why the NHS pays for Cosmetic/Plastic Surgery...

47 million Americans don't have health insurance, what if you lost your job? Couldn't afford to take out health insurance?

The NHS all the way.

The health care system in America is much worst than the NHS, believe me. It doesn't show on papers, in theory, but in practice. Besides the huge amount of things you have to take care of the Insurance Companies are really BUSINESSES and as such their top priority is PROFIT. I'd rather let myself in the government's hands on that one no matter how ...........

The system is more than corrupt. Besides lower class and some middle class people won't afford. Also, these companies will try to maximize profit by doing some rather dirty deeds......

And BTW in general you pay just the same amounts.

No, the US is far more expensive.

Plastic Surgery in the NHS is never performed for Cosmetic reasons, only medical ones. So for instance, nose alterations if people have trouble breathing, breast size alteration is the patient has trouble with severe back pains etc. It wouldn't be logical to spend taxpayers money on people wanting to look better, and that is why it doesn't happen.

I know someone who had cosmetic surgery on the NHS. It was by no means for medical reasons.

When I said Plastic Surgery, I meant only non-medical reasons to be unacceptable.

Yes it is, if it is deemed to significantly enhance the quality of life, or something along those lines. I had my ears pinned back on the NHS when I was 7, for that reason.

nice blog post about American health care vs NHS from an ex-pat American living in the UK:
http://noblesavage.me.uk/2009/08/10/socialism-fever-america-is-dying/

And I'm fed up of hearing people bemoaning they're paying for a system they won't use, how about:

prescription charges?
subsidised dental treatment?
emergency services?
free contraception?
free treatment up to the age of 18?

Tell me you haven't used those, or will have cause to use those at some point in your life?

I can't be arsed with making a full argument about this, the anti-NHS lot don't seem to be bothered with making legitimate arguments anyway.
Want American healthcare?

They just go private in addition to NHS care.

Personally, no it would be a crying shame - a backward step.
