Choose to study at Salford and you’ll be based at a lively, friendly and vibrant uni, just one and a half miles from Manchester city centre. Manchester is home to one of the largest student populations in Europe – and all the nightlife and opportunities that come with it. With music venues, bars and clubs, shopping, culture and major sporting events so close to us, it’s difficult to find another university that offers such a mix of activities, opportunities and entertainment, while being based on a leafy, riverside campus.

We offer more than 500 courses, many of which include the opportunity to gain work placements and to study or work abroad. Our teaching has been highly rated in independent Government assessments and we’re in the top half of institutions for research.
From September 2011 the University of Salford will open a brand new centre at the heart of MediaCityUK. We will be part of the £500 million development which will house six national BBC departments including BBC Breakfast, Sport and Children’s alongside large numbers of smaller, independent, creative businesses. Over 1,500 students will enjoy exceptional opportunities to work with media professionals placing them in prime position for media and digital careers.
We are also investing heavily in our campus buildings and facilities. Our ambitious Campus Plan will improve the University environment and benefit students, staff and the local community.

Directions
The University of Salford campus is less than a mile and a half (3 km) from Manchester City Centre, one of Britain’s most exciting cities.
It has excellent transport links with Salford Crescent railway station on campus and a regular bus service. It is only a couple of minutes’ drive from the motorway network and less than 20 minutes’ drive from Manchester International Airport.

Accessibility
Wheelchair users are very welcome and should normally be able to take any route across the campus. Salford Crescent station can currently only be accessed via steps and there is no lift access to the platforms - this will be rectified over the next few years when the station is expected to undergo a major re-fit. All University buildings have ramped access. Most buildings on the campus have toilets adapted for visitors using wheelchairs.

International/Erasmus opportunities
If you like the idea of working or studying abroad, then you might be interested in the Erasmus programme and our other international exchange opportunities.
Many of our programmes offer an international exchange and you can choose to spend from three months to a year at one of our worldwide partner institutions – many of which teach in English.
If you complete a full Erasmus year abroad, you are also entitled to the Erasmus Tuition Fee Waiver. This means you will pay no tuition fees for the year you spend overseas.
European exchanges also benefit from Erasmus grants which are non-means tested and can be around £3,000.
In addition to this, the University of Salford Global Placement Bursary offers up to £1,000 to all UK/EU students who complete a year studying or working abroad.

Fees and costs
Tuition fees for UK/EU UG students in 2011-12 are £3,375 for full-time and £1,275 for part-time. Tuition fees for UK/EU PG students are £4,400 for full-time and £2,200 for part-time. International fees vary between £9,410 and £11,700.
Scholarships/bursaries
Scholarships of £1,000 are available for if you achieve AAB grades. Students who live in Salford can gain £500 a year, and we also offer bursaries to students who study or work abroad as part of their course.

Getting the right information at the right time is key to your success at university. At Salford, we want you to get the best from our library, learning and ICT resources.
Before you arrive at the University you will receive your personal login details, which means you can start using some services, such as your personal University email account, straight away.
You’ll have access to:
- 2,000 study places at three library sites
- 900 PC workstations in libraries and additional PC suites around the campus
- Free web-based email and internet facilities – 60% of the campus now has wireless access
- Two PC suites open 24 hours per day, and the Clifford Whitworth library is open Monday-Friday until midnight during term time and 24 hours per day during examination periods
- More than 600,000 library items to choose from and 24 special collections
- Almost 13,500 electronic books and over 6,000 unique journal titles
Your student intranet channel at http://students.salford.ac.uk leads you to a wide range of user resources, including Blackboard, your virtual learning environment (VLE).
Sporting
If you’re into sport then the Leisure Centre on the Peel Park Campus has something for you.
Make a splash in our 25m pool, spa, and sauna or there are four refurbished gyms with heaps of fitness equipment - including machines with built-in TVs and music systems. To really break into sweat there’s a huge range of fitness classes to choose from – anything from boxercise to yoga. We have a sports hall with badminton and basketball courts, five aside soccer pitch, handball court and inline hockey court.
There’s also a climbing wall with cave, archway, high lead wall and in situ ropes and two squash courts.
We’ve got instructors on hand too, who can help you set up a fitness programme or test your fitness.
Amenities
You’ll never be short of things to do or places to go while you’re here. You can catch up with friends at the stylish and relaxing Bar Yours, run by the Students’ Union. Sports fans will love the sports bar which features three pool tables, plasma screen TVs showing Sky Sports and a large projection screen for sports matches.
Those who want a quieter option can head to the comfy lounge bar which also offers a galleried area where you can people watch to your hearts content! If you’re looking to email friends, access the internet or even get a bit of studying done in a relaxing environment, you can make use of the wifi access.
Or try Café Yours for a great range food and drinks including halal and vegetarian options - you can relax, surf, read and chat in a comfortable environment.
There are also shops, banks, cashpoints, meeting spaces, a bookshop and many more facilities on our campus.
Medical Services
The Medical Centre is sited on the main Peel Park Campus. It is staffed by NHS General Practitioners, and trained Nurses. The Medical Centre offers a comprehensive range of health and counselling services. As many of these services are by appointment, it is always advisable to ring them first.
Welfare Services
If you need advice about any aspect of being a student at Salford, Student Life is the place to go. The service is based in University House – right in the heart of the campus – it has a bright relaxed environment that is welcoming for all our students. You can also visit one of the satellite Student Life information desks in Allerton Building or Adelphi Building. If the advisers can’t help you there and then, they can make an appointment for you to see a specialist adviser, or signpost you to the relevant service. The University also has a free and confidential counselling service.
Student Union
The University of Salford Students’ Union (USSU) is here to help you get the most out of your time at Salford. The Union is an independent, separate organisation from the University, led by students for the benefit of students. We’ll provide you with all the support you need while you study here, give you loads of opportunities to meet other students and fight for your interests at the University.
Careers Service
We’ll do all we can to enhance your chances of getting a job after you graduate. The Careers & Employability service provides advice and information to help you find the ideal career for you – accessible either online or by visiting our new modern and vibrant careers library on campus. Our dedicated team of careers consultants will be happy to guide you through your options, offering sound advice and top tips.
We also have links with over 200 voluntary organisations, providing a wide variety of volunteering opportunities in a range of organisations.
Financial Aid
The Access to Learning Fund (ALF) can help you if you need extra financial support either because you have higher than average costs, or you face unexpected financial problems during your course
You may be able to get help from ALF for course-related costs, such as childcare and travel to university; general living costs, such as rent and emergency costs if your Student Maintenance Loan is delayed.

Availability
All first year undergraduate and postgraduate students are GUARANTEED a place in University or University Partner accommodation provided you apply using our online booking system by 1 September 2011. Before your application can be processed you must have accepted an unconditional firm offer to study here.
We have always provided accommodation for all new students but may give priority to certain groups depending on the demand for each particular year.
Costs
Whatever your budget and your requirements we have several options to help you choose which accommodation is best for you. We have standard accommodation which offers great value and recently built/refurbished accommodation some with ensuite facilities.
Our University and University partner accommodation is excellent value. Prices start from £59.50 per week (at time of writing). You’ll need to pay an initial deposit and the rest can be paid in instalments.

Recognised off campus accommodation
You won’t be short of places to rent if you decide not to live in our University accommodation.
It couldn’t be easier to get to us by bus or train from popular student areas like Withington and Fallowfield. Both places are connected to Manchester city centre by one of the busiest bus routes in Europe – and from there it’s just a quick bus or train ride into campus.
