Bangor University Students' Union

Bangor like all other universities has a Students' Union. whilst most people think that the Students' Union for Bangor only serves the direct university it is not the case.

Bangor has a satellite campus based in Wrexham and the Students' Union reach out to them and offer help and advice by being mobile and sending sabbatical officers and staff from within the Students' Union down there once a week.

Services

The SU functions as way to help students through all aspects of studying at Bangor. There are responsible for funding the many clubs and societies which are offered as well as providing advice and support to Students via the Student's Advice Center. They also campagin for aspects for the benefit of students and which students on mass. On October 16 2008, for example, a Referendum occurred for the entire student body to vote on the Union's position on Top Up Fees.

The union can also help students when financial crisis arises by offering a £50 crisis loan which must be repaid but has a flexible repayment plan. This is a short term fix to financial problems when a student does not qualify for a hardship fund from the Money Support Unit or if the money is need urgently.

Sabbatical Officers

Every University's Students' Union will have sabbatical officers, The Bangor Sabbatical officers for the academic year 2009 - 2010 are:

  • Students' Union President - John Jackson
  • Deputy President - Spencer George
  • Societies and Events Officer - Thomas Hecht
  • Athletic Union President - Andy John
  • UMCB (Undeb Myfyrwyr Cymru Bangor / Bangor Welsh Students Union) - Sharyn Williams


Sabbatical Officers are elected every year and any member of the student body is able to stand for these positions, each of the Positions entails a different set of skills and jobs.

Senate

The Students' Union Senate is the newly evolved equivalent of the Students' Union council. Senate is made up of Independent Senators, Heads of Committees, SWD (students With Disabilities) Senator, LGBT Senator, Mature Students Senator, 2 Sabbatical Officers and the Union Chair.

The Board

The board is responsible for the financial side of the Union, and are the people who are accountable for the financial; and Legal issues surrounding the Union.
