Introduction

Facilities

Libraries

Whitechapel

The glorious converted church with its high ceilings and beautiful architecture holds an expansive medical and dental library which has pretty much any book you need (and if they don't have it, they will get it), journals and internet access. Rigorously enforced silence means that many of the QM students come here to escape from their heinous library. Good opening hours, lots of computer access and plenty of walled off individual and group seating areas ensure that revision is made as comfortable as possible. Always warm, always well let, it is a place to escape.

Barts Hospital

The Barts Hospital library is an jewel unknown to many outside the upper years and Dawson Hall residents. It is a beautiful two tiered library in a well maintained classical style (think leather sofas and lots of polished wood) that holds a smaller core of essential textbooks. Also has extensive journal libraries and current newspapers, with seating arranged in a horseshoe around the shelves. The upper tier forms a rectangular walkway overlooking the shelves and is filled with tables for private study. The basement is open 24 hours a day and contains some computers and working areas.

Mile End Library

Not good for medics. Enough said. Noisy downstairs, nice and silent upstairs but poor selection of medical books (all have been shipped off to Whitechapel). Only useful if you want to do some PBL or something and do not have to do any real research.

IT and computing

Computer access is everywhere around Barts and the London and they are new, running XP and have a generous storage facility. There are computers in the libraries, in the student's union, in the adminstration building (mainly used for teaching microanatomy) so it shouldn't be a problem getting hold of one. Speeds are fast, webmail is a bit of a let down however.

Sports

Welfare

There is a full time, paid welfare officer sabbatical position who's sole job is to look after the (often complicated) welfare issues of the Medical and Dental students. They have very close ties with the Pastoral team and Dean's team in the medical school and will petition them for things on your behalf. Free condoms in a bucket upstairs in the Union. Lots of health awareness campaigns and drives, including Barts sexual health week aka SHAG week.

Healthcare

There is an on-site GP and nurse practitioner for staff and students at the Mile End campus, that is associated with the local Globe Town surgery in Bethnal Green.

Shops

Mile End campus

On site shop, very expensive. Budgens-7 mins walk away, has essentials but not cheap (but not as rapey as the on site shop) Asda superstore in Leyton-Two stops away (around 4 mins) from Mile End tube. Massive Asda. Enough said. Many fried chickens shops, pizza shops and newsagents within a stone's throw.

Whitechapel- Many newsagents line whitechapel high street and the hospital/union. Likewise chicken shops and rather tasty kebab shops (e.g. Tayyebs!) Big Sainsbury's behind Whitechapel station.

Dawson-

Tesco Express you will pass on the way home from Barbican, there is also a Sainsbury's near Farringdon tube (8 mins walk).

Restaurants

Banks

Mile End

Onsite Barclays. Hole in the Wall x2. Budgens has free cash withdrawal.

Dawson

Has a Natwest under three minutes away (you will pass it on the way home from Barbican tube, it's right next to the Tesco Express)

Whitechapel

Natwest by the station, Barclays opposite the Natwest.

Hole in the walls: Natwest, Barclays, Budgens, Londis and one in the Union.

Transport

Whitechapel/Mile End campus-

Halfway between Stepney Green station (District and Hammersmith and City line) and Mile End station (District, Hammersmith and City and Central line). Lots of bus stops connect you with the rest of London, quite literally. 25 bendy bus goes past from Stratford (passing your doorstep) to Oxford Circus/Holborn. 205 will also take you to Whitechapel.

Dawson: Barbican station is closest (3 mins). Farringdon station is also nearby. Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan, Circle and District lines. Central line is two stops away in Liverpool street, another two stops to Mile End (if you need to visit mates etc-takes about 20 mins). Many buses that go to North, East, South and West London pass by, the 24 hour 25 bus you will take home from the Union stops at St Pauls station, a 10 minute walk home IIRC. St Pauls station also holds the central line if you can't be bothered changing at Liverpool St.

Careers service

Part-time jobs

The Union only employs student bar staff, paid at a hourly rate of 7 quid something. Very easy to get work, always looking to fill up the "bank"...shifts are held in a diary at the back of the bar, bar manager (John le Bar) is a living legend. Been there like 25 years.

Can also DJ, if you know how.

HCA work in the London if you are trained/get trained.

Aside from that...this is London. If you can't get a part time shitty job, you are fail.

Religious facilities

Mile End-Onsite multifaith centre. Islamic society and Christian society active. All faith groups represented one way or another. East London Baptist church next to mile end station, maybe a five minute walk away.

Whitechapel-Barts and the London Student Association (aka BLSA aka medics union) constitution prevents religious or political society affiliation. Keeps it nice and neutral. QMSU doesn't have this caveat. Prayer rooms available within the London. East London Mosque 5 mins away.

Dawson-Erm, not too sure about prayer rooms. Barts hospital will have a chapel. St Pauls cathedral is nearby-'nuff said.

Social

Bars, pubs and clubs

The Students Association's bar is The Griffin, located behind the Royal London, it hosts regular sports nights, comedy nights and club nights.

Medical and dental students can also use QMSUs bar, the Drapers Arms, at the Mile End campus.

There are plenty of bars and niche clubs in Whitechapel, Aldgate and Mile End. The medical school is also located conveniently close to The City, the West End and the rest of London providing an unrivalled range of nightlife.
