Bournemouth University is a 'new' university located in the Bournemouth and Poole areas. It was created in 1992 out of Bournemouth Polytechnic. Its main Talbot Campus is technically in Poole while the Lansdowne Campus is near Bournemouth town centre, which makes you wonder why it's got Bournemouth in its name and not Poole or Dorset! If you're thinking of applying here, the schools of health and social care, business, management, tourism, design, media and engineering and computing are all highly regarded in some aspects. FacilitiesHome to the NCCA... so really good computer facilities for animation and graphics. LibrariesThe main library is called The Sir Michael Cobham Library and is on the Talbot Campus. The building also houses study rooms and PC facilities - these are located on the lower levels of the building and have extended opening hours (right up to midnight during the week) so it can still be used when the main library is closed. The short term loan section also has these extended opening hours which means you can get the most use out of the short time you have have the publications. There is in addition, a library at Bournemouth House. Both libraries have study spaces and photocopying, though only black and white is available at Bournemouth House Library. IT and ComputingThe uni has a good supply of computers for student use. Over 150 are available at ALL times of the day and year with over 300 available until 10pm in the library. As a student you will also have access to a number of printers around campus too. If you have IT troubles with your own PC or laptop etc, there are also IT surgeries run three days a week where you can get assistance. Internet connections are also available in most/all residences. A wireless connection is also now available within most uni buildings.
SportsThere are a lot of sports facilities. At Talbot campus you have the sports hall, dance studio, gym and weight rooms, climbing wall, two flood lit pitches and two un-lit pitches - ass artificial surfaces. The Uni also uses the Deam Park Cricket Ground. A lot of sports make use of these facilities. These include:
They could either be classes run for people of all abilities through to official SU sports teams that play against other unis. You'll also be able to book many of the facilities for your own use too.
WelfareHealthcareThe uni has a medical centre in Talbot House. You need to register with the centre soon after getting to Bournemouth and you can get a registration for on the website. The centre has great coverage during the week at term times, but you cannot use it at weekends nor during the holidays. You can use the medical centre for many reasons - whether you are ill, have a medical problem, need information on pretty much any medical issue or if you need a minor procedure that can be carried out by a nurse or doctor. Quite unusually for a university, it has its own dental surgery too, which like the medical centre, has good opening hours during the week. If you want to use it you'll have to look for the contact details at the free telephone in the SU at Poole House. You'll also need a HC2 form if you don't want to have to pay for treatment (with an HC2 form full time students do not have to pay for dental and other medical treatments). ShopsRestaurantsOn Talbot campus there are a few places you can eat - Dylan's bar and The Loft both also serve drinks too. You also have the refectory in Poole House, the main place for food and the studio cafe bar which also offers internet access. On Lansdowne campus there is another refectory (in Bournemouth House) and a coffee bar too. If you want to 'eat out' in town both Bournemouth and Poole have a number of great restaurants for bigger meals and loads of little cafes and sandwich shops to grab smaller bites to eat. BanksTransportCareers and Placements ServiceThe careers service will give you help in person, as well as providing significant online assistance with general careers choice and advice, help with finding a job and help with applying for jobs. As well as this help they also have loads of really useful events. These include workshops to assist you and by getting employers to come to the uni to give talks, presentations and all sorts of info about working for them. You'll need to book a place at most of these sessions though and they make you pay a refundable deposit when you book - so make sure if you can no longer make it you let them know at least 24 hours beforehand otherwise you'll loose your money. Part-time jobsReligious facilitiesThe multifaith Chaplaincy is located in Talbot house and has a good number of facilities. There is a general meditation room and an Islamic Prayer room. I you need to see someone there there are three Chaplains and you can also arrange to meet with a Jewish Rabbi or a Muslim Imam. Whatever religion you follow, you can use the Chaplaincy service for talking about your personal issues, talking about religion, as a way to meet people of a similar faith at the uni or to find information about local groups for many different religions. Teaching qualityBournemouth currently seems to ranks about mid-table in most league tables - somewhere in the 30s to 50s. The is a general rise over where it was a few years back and probably indicates factors like her entry requirements, more services and higher funding. This may imply better or improved teaching quality. In student satisfaction surveys, the uni scores well in subjects like history, technology, finance and management, while ones like law, art and design and social work fair less well.
