The Executive

The executive committee is elected each year to run the Cardiff University Students’ Union. Some positions are full-time sabbatical roles, taken by recent graduates or students taking a break from their studies. Other positions, such as Quench editor are non-sabbatical positions and duties are undertaken alongside the student’s studies. In the 2007 AGM, it was voted that non-sabbatical officers would be paid.

Societies and Athletic Union

Societies are overseen by the Societies, Post-Graduates and Internationals Officer; the AU is run by the AU President. Both positions are full-time sabbatical roles.

Societies

The SPI Officer runs the societies council, deals with budgets and any other problems that might arise. They are also responsible for organising the Freshers’ Fayre, which takes place in September during Freshers’ Week.

Societies cover almost every hobby or interest that you can think of it. If someone hasn’t already thought of it, you can always create your own society! Many departments from the university have their own societies, such as Law, the Business and Medicine. There are also religious and international groups such as the Christian Union and Islamic Society. You can also find more unusual societies, such as the Castle Garrison, the Real Ale & Cider Society and Funky Arse Disco Dancing.

Student Volunteering Cardiff (SVC)

SVC is one of the largest student-led volunteering organisations in the UK. With over 40 different projects, SVC makes a major contribution to the community in Cardiff. Projects include one-on-one befriending schemes with disabled young people and the elderly, educational tutoring projects, working in homeless shelters, taking young carers on day trips, environmental work on community farms, hospice care, mental health, children's recreational youth clubs etc. etc. and with projects requiring as little as a couple of hours a week on various days there really is something for all tastes and time constraints. Getting involved with SVC is a great way to meet new people, offers plenty of opportunities for leadership (chances to co-ordinate a project or even join the student exec committee) and looks great on your CV!!! Go to [1] for more information.

Athletic Union

The AU is the home of competitive and participation sport at Cardiff University Students' Union. The AU is run by the AU President who is responsible for the budgeting and welfare of AU clubs as well as all AU events, such as campaigns, the AU Awards Ball and the annual Varsity competition against Swansea University.

There are a wide range of sports clubs, many of which participate in the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA), with teams travelling all over the country.

A little closer to home, the AU also runs a competitive Intra Mural Games (IMG) programme, which runs every Wednesday. Teams compete in football, rugby and netball. When it comes to signing up for teams, queuing starts early!
