Debbie Stone, Head of UK/EU Admissions at Middlesex University gives her top 5 tips for getting the most out of Clearing.

Before results day

Make sure you have a plan in place in case you do find yourself in clearing – it is more important than ever this year to be quick off the mark, with places at a premium competition will be fierce. Make sure you have access to your past qualifications and you have thought carefully about possible options if you don’t get the grades you need, or indeed get better marks than expected. This includes choosing universities and courses you would seriously consider and knowing how to contact them.

On the day

Make sure you have access to a room with a computer where you can sit and make calls without disruption, research university websites and courses and check your emails.

Be methodical

Be methodical in your approach. Go down your list, starting with the university you most want to study at. Make sure you take notes, especially of contact names and numbers, you will have a lot to think about and you will need to be organised. Be patient, lines will be busy but don’t give up.

Present your case

When you get through, you are bound to be nervous, so it is important to accept this and present your case as clearly as possible. Be passionate about your choice and your reasons for wanting to study that particular course at that particular university, ask serious questions – you probably put a lot of thought into your first choice university and you need to know this one will be right for you too.

Stay calm

It is easier said than done but don’t panic. Try to stay calm and keep focused on your goal of getting a place on a great course.
