Religious facilities

University College Plymouth St Mark & St John has a Christian foundation and is a Church of England Institution. The Chaplaincy Centre aims to be fully inclusive, welcoming all of any faith or none. We actively encourage an open and friendly atmosphere where all views are respected in a spirit of generous hospitality. There are social events throughout the year and we are involved in all areas of the University College life. We work in close liaison with Student Services and the Student’s Union.

The Chaplain is available to offer help, advice, a listening ear and a sense of humour for all whether they belong to a faith tradition or not.

The Chaplaincy team comprises of the chaplain Revd Paul N. Thompson (Paul), two full time Chaplaincy Assistants and a number of volunteer Student Chaplaincy Assistants. We are based in the Chaplaincy Centre which is used as a social space and a place of sanctuary, prayer and worship. It is a safe, quiet space available to whoever needs to use it.

The Chaplaincy Centre includes the Marshall Room, a comfortable common room and meeting place where tea, coffee and toast with Fairtrade spreads are available; the main Chaplaincy Office, the home of the Chaplaincy Assistants and the first place to go for enquiries about the Chaplaincy; the Quiet Room, reserved for prayer and meditation and used by people of any faith group or none; the Chaplain’s Office, where the Chaplain likes to be disturbed!; and the Chapel (St Mark & St John) is where Christian services are held.

Social

Bars, pubs and clubs

On campus there are two Student Union bars and a licensed restaurant called Cafe' Rendezvous. Plymouth has many student-friendly bars, pubs and clubs. Our friends at the University of Plymouth have created a very thorough guide to the student waterholes in the city, you can find it here (go to the 'bars, clubs and pubs' section) http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/University_of_Plymouth

Environment

Architecture

UCP Marjon is a self-contained campus with accommodation, academic and sports facilities all on one site. There are also bars, shops, restaurants and childcare facilities on campus. On a clear day you can see the city of Plymouth and Dartmoor National Park from the upper floors of our buildings. The central feature of the campus is the quad:

Local area

Marjon's campus is situated on the outskirts of Plymouth, ten minutes from the city centre and ten minutes from the edge of Dartmoor National Park (both the moor and the city are visible from our campus on a sunny day!). This unique location means that our students enjoy both the student nightlife, shopping, culture and history of the city of Plymouth as well as the natural beauty of Dartmoor and the beaches of Devon and Cornwall. The campus is well connected with regular buses to the city and a small regional airport nearby.

Teaching quality

Academically, our University College strives for excellence. Our National Student Survey results have placed us top ten for two of the past four years. In the Sunday Times University Guide, we ranked amongst the top five University Colleges the past 2 years (2007, 2008).

As the most experienced teacher training provider in the South West, we have been successfully training teachers since 1840, receiving praise in our Ofsted inspections, including an “outstanding” for our secondary Management and Quality Assurance. We have excellent links with local schools and UCP Marjon is both well known and well respected.
