From The Student Room WikiTSR Wiki > University > Choosing a University > University Guides > De Montfort University
De Montfort University is located in Leicester, East Midlands, United Kingdom. It was created in 1992 from the old City of Leicester Polytechnic. Today it has just two campuses, both within Leicester itself: Leicester City Campus and Charles Frears. Other campuses outside of Leicester have been sold off or transferred to other Universities. Out of the two unis in Leicester, De Montfort perhaps have the lower reputation, but rather than more traditional courses, it focuses on more vocational and career specific courses. Video Tour
FacilitiesLibrariesThe library provides all the usual services. Journals (also available online), books and other articles. There are three libraries which provide this service with the Kimberlin library being the biggest. The inside of the library has been modernised. To some it's considered to be 'like the inside of an IKEA store', 'breathtakingly modernised' and 'the only good point of DMU'. IT and ComputingSportsThe uni has quite a good sports centre. It has the usual sports hall which plays host to basketball games between local team Leicester riders and other teams from across the country. The league runs from october to easter time. As well as the basketball court the sports centre (John Sandford sports centre) has facilities for badminton, squash, indoor tennis and weight training. You can purchase a sports card for £42 for 12 months. There is also a sports centre down Saffron Lane, which is called Aylestone Sports Centre (I think) which is about 20mins walk from DMU. A short car ride away from the city centre, or a bus ride is an outdoor retail park, fosse park. This holds even more shops if the city centre doesn't fill your shopping needs.

Dont forget maryland chicken for when your drunk in town and on narborough road. 6 hot wings and chips £1.99 : ) The local area itself is very cultural. Leicester is located on the River Soar which runs very close to the uni providing a nice place to relax. Teaching qualityDe Montfort doesn't have the best reputation for a university, though some say it is getting better. It is more highly regarded for art based subjects and certainly doesn't have a reputation for being good with more traditional, academic subjects.
