De Montfort University

De Montfort University (DMU) is a modern and ambitious university, with roots going back 100 years to the art and technical buildings it now occupies. The University has more than 18,000 students, based on a compact and safe city campus right in the centre of Leicester.

A strong academic focus, international research and close links with industry mean that a DMU qualification is highly regarded and relevant to the world of work.

Campus and Architecture

"De Montfort University is in the middle of a £186.5 million investment in its Campus and surroundings. This investment gives
you the most up-to-date facilities possible and allows us to continue providing education that is modern, innovative
and state-of-the-art."

The Campus has a modern, sophisticated feel. There’s a good mix of well-designed modern and traditional buildings, with highlights such as the Campus Centre, or the new £35 million Faculty of Business (Hugh Aston) building. The University is closely involved with the regeneration of Leicester, which will "put historic buildings back on the map and create a first class teaching and research Campus at De Montfort University". The development of the immediate area surrounding the Hugh Aston building has freed the 14th century Magazine Gateway building, allowing its incorporation into the University Campus. This has provided the area with improved pedestrian links, and has created greater public space.

The Hawthorn building, dating over one hundred years old

Other notable buildings located on Campus include the Hawthorn building, pictured above. Built in 1897, it was constructed to serve as "a very handsome school that would be enormous credit to the town and … so that it would answer its purpose for the next 100 years". The building now houses the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.

Local Area

Leicester's Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower, built in 1868 and located in the city centre
"Leicester is a lively and vibrant city with lots of shops and clubs all within walking distance of the university (ten minutes) or you can get a bus if you’re really lazy! Narborough Road has loads of Indian restaurants, shops and much more.
"The local area itself is very multicultural. There are people from all over the world with different backgrounds and faiths which gives the city a vibrant feeling. It also means whilst you are here you can experience a lot of different cultures, including a great variety of extremely tasty food. Leicester is located on the River Soar which runs very close to the University providing a nice place to relax."

Academic Quality

De Montfort University is highly regarded for professional and creative subjects. Its students regularly win major competitions, and it has the only Centre for Excellence in Performance Arts in the country.
