You might think that when you go away, your folks will sort and supply everything for you. And so they should. But just in case they forget - they are knocking on after all - remember these yourself...

To outsiders, the world of academia is a refined hothouse of study and learning. You're about to find out different. Here's stuff to do on those, ahem, rare free moments...

  1. Facebook / Myplace / Bebo
  2. Get a really big cardboard box, it can provide hours of pointless fun
  3. All computer games, particularly games such as The Sims
  4. Invent a pointless but entertaining game
  5. Start up or join a 'procrastination society'
  6. Reorganise your room furniture. Draw a plan first and don't miss any details
  7. Get on a bus just for the ride without really going anywhere
  8. Invent your own language
  9. Make your own Christmas tree with cans
  10. Daytime TV - namely Countdown and Doctors

Top 10 student tips

Everyone wants an easier life - even students. Here's a few tips aimed at taking just a little of the strain away...

  1. Why buy expensive new books just because they look nice? Get them from Amazon, ebay or last year's students and save money
  2. Use travel rucksacks to carry food shopping - you'll carry a lot of weight without killing your fingers or shoulders
  3. Don't lose mates by playing your music too loudly, using their stuff or eating their food
  4. Don't be afraid to change your course if you don't like it
  5. Enjoy your first year and focus on trying to get a 2.1 in your second year
  6. Learn shorthand - very handy for lectures
  7. Learn how to cook
  8. Keep in touch with friends back home
  9. Try to get decent work experience
