LocationMain site Girton village, on the outskirts of Cambridge. It is the furthest out of all the colleges, and is a long way from the centre and from the faculties. If you go to Girton you need to have a bike or allow 45 minutes or more to walk into town. (A fast walking pace can considerably reduce this time.) In Girton village there are all the necessary shops such as mini supermarkets and services.
(all distances measured with gmaps pedometer) Wolfson Court On Clarkson Road, near Churchill College and next to the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (See map). Rooms overlook 4 inner courts.
AccommodationFirst years live in the main college site, two miles out of Cambridge. Rooms in college are bright, airy and generally quite spacious (though there are some smaller rooms). First year rooms are allocated by random ballot, and everyone pays the same rent, regardless of the size of their room set at a constant rate for 3 years. Those who get smaller first year rooms become the first to pick in subsequent years - which means one can end up with a a really nice room, such as the Peartrees Accomodation which is hotel style accomodation for roughly £120/week. Second years choose between living in Wolfson Court (a small, modern annexe of about 80 students in West Cambridge) and living in a college house (a number of which lie along Girton Road), though a small number choose to remain in college (in particular, music students live in college for each of the three years). Wolfson Court has its own cafeteria, which does good lunches. Third years generally move back into college, though small numbers do choose to live in Wolfson court or in college houses. Social SpacesThere is a College Bar and JCR room with Xbox and tv for relaxing. Formal HallIt's £7.50 for girtonians, £10 for guests. Library and ComputingThere is the main library in Girton College. With 95,000 books it's one of the biggest and best college libraries. The library's opening hours are as follows: During Full Term: Monday to Friday: 9am - 11pm, Saturday: 10am - 6pm (this is extended to 11pm during the exam period in Easter Term), Sunday: 10am - 11pm. Outside Full Term: 9am - 5pm. There is also a library at Wolfson Court, which is open 24 hours a day. There are two computer rooms in Girton on the B2a and F Corridor both open 24/7 to Girton Students. Rooms have ethernet connections and wireless hotspots are being extended, currently covering the library. Academic performanceGirton's ranking (out of 29) in the Tompkins Table which compares exam performance at the different colleges: 22nd (2008), 21st (2007), 22nd (2006), 24th (2005), 25th (2004), 17th (2003), 16th (2002), 17th (2001), 18th (2000). SportsGirton was declared the 9th sportiest Cambridge College in Michealmas 2009 by The Tab. See The Tab article: The College Cup revealed AtmosphereA lovely big old building from the late C19th, and has fantastic grounds/gardens! It is a long way from the town centre (but of course has Girton village, so kind of has it's own little town out there -- it's not like you have to trek miles for a pint of milk...or a pint of anything). Being a way out, though, makes the community up there really cohesive -- it's got a great atmosphere. One of the biggest colleges in terms of undergraduate numbers. Possibly a more relaxed atmosphere than some of the more "prestigious" colleges. Oh and there's a college cat called Buster! FacilitiesOn the main site
