Application process for Clifford Chance.

After initial screening of online applications, applicants will be asked to take a Situational Judgement test (a short questionnaire). Passing this stage, applicants will move on to an Online verbal reasoning test (which can be practiced in advance). Those who pass each stage will be invited to an assessment day before Clifford Chance makes a final decision on whether or not to offer a place.

Entry requirements and type of person suited for Clifford Chance.

An excellent academic record is an obvious requirement for Clifford Chance and applicants are expected to meet their benchmark criteria. Applicants are therefore required to have achieved a minimum of 320 UCAS points (or equivalent) and have, or be on target to attain, a 2:1 degree. Clifford Chance encourages applicants from any academic discipline, however, basing its decisions on your potential, not your current knowledge of the legal system.

Other important attributes applicants should have include:

  • The ability to analyse complex issues and provide creative solutions.
  • The drive, motivation and desire to start a career in law
  • The ability to communicate ideas quickly and effectively - not just to colleages but clients as well.
  • The ability to work well within a team
  • A keen eye for detail

Future prospects and training at Clifford Chance.

Those without a degree, or qualified outside the UK are welcomed to apply, but will have to complete preliminary qualifications to begin the training contract.

Before the training contract, graduates take a two week induction course to give them the basic knowledge they'll need. Over the two years of the training contract, graduates will complete four rotations in various practice areas, giving them a wide range of industry specific knowledge and experience. This also allows graduates to develop their team work skills and to liaise with a number of different clients. At least two of the placements need to be completed in the following core areas: Banking & Finance, Capital Markets, and Corporate. Graduates also have the opportunity to sit a seat outside the UK, furthering their own personal development and improving their knowledge of international law. During the contract, tasks will be structured specifically toward graduates' own abilities, and they will be able to work closely with a supervisor from within their practice area to analyse their progress. Clifford Chance's training period aims to give graduates the core knowledge they'll need in addition to providing them with excellent opportunities to develop themselves.
