Experiences

If you have applied to JP Morgan, we would like you to hear from you. Please use the following form to detail your experiences of application, to aid those interested in following a similar career path.

Position applied for: Summer internship
Year of Application:2009
Region:London
Educational Background: BSc Economics at target university

What were your experiences of the application process?
The first round was 3 general interviews and a numerical/verbal reasoning test. The interviews focused on motivation, CV, and some basic problem-solving challenges. Was asked which areas I was specifically interested in as the 2nd round would be desk specific. Took a very long time for the invitation to 2nd round, approx. 3 weeks. 2nd round was with two different teams. Was very focused on what they did, and why I was suitable/interested in them. Some technical questions about analysis, and some on economic issues and current affairs. Much more challenging than the 1st round (which had been relatively easy).

What is it like working for JP Morgan?
Turned down the offer, so no lengthy experience. My one comment would be that some people think the culture is too 'American' i.e. aggressive, intense, but my experience was that actually the people are relaxed and sociable. Certainly driven, but you can't expect any less in this industry.

How has it compared to your expectations?
Having got beyond the HR screen they have on campus, very favourably. I don't believe they do themselves justice at recruiting events. Once I got to the desk specific interviews, was impressed by how personable the employees were.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Working towards partnership at a different firm.

Finally, any advice you would give to potential applicants?
Have a clear idea of the area you're interested in. Invitations to the 2nd round come from specific desks, and they respond favourable to people who have already considered their interests and skills and matched them to an appropriate team.
