Help:Guide to editing a Subject Guide

TSR Wiki > About TSR > Editing Help > Guide to editing a Subject Guide

So you are wanting to create a new subject guide. First check here to see if your subject guide has not already been started. If it has been started, then go here to see what needs adding. If it hasn't, then read on!

Step 1

First, follow the red link for your chosen subject from this page to the place to start the guide.

If your subject is not listed on that page and you do not know how to add it, ask in the About Wiki Forum for help.

Step 2

Copy the following text in to the editing box, replacing the 'XXXX' near the top and at the bottom of the text with the subject's name. This will create the headings for your subject guide.

TSR Wiki > Study Help > Subjects and Revision > Subject Guides > XXXX ----

Step 3

You are ready to start writing the article. Start off with a brief introduction before the 'Courses' heading and follow the advice below on what can go in to each section. The writing for each section simply needs to in between the section headings you added in step 2.

For more help, see the editing help page, or ask in the About Wiki Forum.

Advice For Writing Each Section of the Guide

If a section is not applicable, then it can be missed out (eg GCSE section etc in the Medicine guide).

Start with a brief introduction on the subject here. Maybe a bit about what it is, it's history etc. No more than 2 or 3 paragraphs. Any more detail can be added in a new section at the end.

Courses

A paragraph about when/where you can study this subject/what stages it can be studied at. Generally say what the course is like - popular, rare, hard/easy etc.

GCSE

Summary on the GCSE course and link to main article. If this section is bigger than 2 or 3 paragraphs, it should have it's own article - see the GCSE Subject Guide Guide with a paragraph written here followed by a link to the article,

A Level

Summary on the A Level course and link to main article. If this section is bigger than 2 or 3 paragraphs, it should have it's own article - see the A Level Subject Guide Guide with a paragraph written here followed by a link to the article,

International Baccalaureate

Summary on the IB course and link to main article. If this section is bigger than 2 or 3 paragraphs, it should have it's own article with a paragraph written here followed by a link to the article,

Scottish Standard Grade

Summary on the Standard Grade course and link to main article. If this section is bigger than 2 or 3 paragraphs, it should have it's own article with a paragraph written here followed by a link to the article,

Scottish Higher

Summary on the Higher course and link to main article. If this section is bigger than 2 or 3 paragraphs, it should have it's own article with a paragraph written here followed by a link to the article,

University

A summary about what the course is like at university, popularity, competitiveness etc. Should contain a link to the relevant University subject forum.

The Course

A brief description of this course at uni and a link to the main uni course page where possible - create the University course page if this whole uni section is more than 3 or 4 paragraphs long. See the University Course Guide Guide for more details.

Applying

Summary of guidance on applying and where to study this subject and link to main page/section on applying for this subject in the University Course Guide page if such a page had been created. This section can be moved entirely to the University course guide article.

Personal Statements

Write a sentence or two and link to sample PSs. This section can be moved entirely to the University course guide article.

Study Help

Links for pages like study tips, websites, books, and anything else we may have on the wiki or forums. Should contain a link to the relevant Academic Help Forum

Revision notes

Link to subject revision notes section along side a sentence (see Geography for possible wording of this section.

Other Info

Anything else? Links to any other articles? This section can be renamed and contain anything else which is relevant which is already on the wiki or forums or maybe something you want to write about. Could include

 • History of the subject
 • Applications of the subject
 • Famous people/important people within the subject
 • Links to TSR Societies about the subject.

Also See

Create a list of links to similar subjects, or mention what would be good to study along side this subject (but do not be exam type specific). Could have links to any other articles of forum posts which might be relevant to something to do with this subject.
