The Hull York Medical School (HYMS) is a medical school, shared between the Universities of York and Hull. Established in 2003, it is a new medical school that teaches medicine using a modern method known as Problem Based Learning or PBL. The course offered is integrated, meaning that students see patients on clinical placement from the first year, and the curriculum can be described as a spiral curriculum, referring to how the content is taught. In this case it means that previously covered topics will come up again and again as the medical students progress from year to year, with further depth and detail added at each visit.

All successful applicants to HYMS are randomly allocated places in either Hull or York. This decision is irreversible unless the student has a particular, pressing reason to be placed in either one campus or another - subject to the senior members of HYMS' approval.

Facilities

As HYMS is one medical school spread across two campuses, medical students at this medical school become members of both universities, therefore the facilities of both universities are open to all HYMS students.

Libraries

At Hull University, there is one main library used by all students on campus, known as the Brynmor Jones Library, often abbreviated to BJL for ease.

On the York University campus, the main library is called the JB Morrel Library, or JBML.

Both libraries can be accessed and used online, typically for actions such as searching library content for availability, or extending loans on books. Visit the HYMS Website on this page for links to both libraries for more details.

Sports

Sports at HYMS is made very easy, and there's a lot of selection to choose from. Every HYMS student has the opportunity to play sports either via the standard university sports teams, or they have the option of joining the HYMS Sports Association (SA), which allows them to play any sport that is set up by the SA. To elaborate, one can play, say, football for the Hull University as well as the HYMS team - the university sports associations and the HYMS SA are separate entities, which allows for this. Furthermore, joining the HYMS SA means that any member can choose to play any sport on offer by the SA (at last count this was 13 sports, with more planned for the 2008/2009 term). The difference between the HYMS SA and university sports associations is, essentially, the commitment factor. The HYMS SA was set up with the medical timetable in mind, which cannot always operate on the same basis as the university timetable. Thus, the HYMS SA provide sports mainly for stress relief and enjoyment, and is very flexible so it can include any medical student who wishes to attend as little or as much as he or she wants to.

Outside of the HYMS SA, all the medical students have the option of joining the university sports teams like any other student of their university.

Shops

The types of shops available obviously depend on which campus a successful applicant is allocated to. In York, the university campus is but a ten minute bus ride from the centre of York, and there are a few convenient shops in the centre of the university campus, along with a few cafes located in several of the main buildings. Generally, most places are in walking distance from the central campus.

In Hull, there are several convenient supermarkets within five minutes' walking distance of the campus, such as a Tesco's and Sainbury's. Furthermore, there is a Waterstone's, Union Shop, café, bar (Sanctuary) and night club (Asylum) all located at the Hull Student Union, on campus. Moreover, there are a variety of pubs (easily numbering at least 6 or 7) within a ten minute walking distance of the main campus, as well as a whole street (Newland Avenue) that is filled with shops for other needs - green grocers, hair stylists/barbers etc.

Restaurants

This, again, depends on which campus you are allocated to. In Hull, most of the eat-in restaurants can be found in the city centre (which is a ten or fifteen minute bus ride from campus). However, there are many takeaway restaurants, featuring such cuisines as Chinese, Indian, Turkish and more within a five minutes' walk of the campus, as well as several pubs as aforementioned.

Banks

In Hull, and within five minutes of the university campus, the following banks can be found:

  • Lloyd's
  • NatWest
  • Barclay's
