Halifax became a college in 2002 and is named after Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, the 1st Earl of Halifax. It is the newest and largest College (by student numbers) of the University. Halifax is located just of the campus to the south down Holmefield Lane off Main street. Turning into West Moor Lane will take you past the Porters Lodge. It is a 10 minute walk from central hall if you are fit.

Residences

Residences in Halifax are split into 8 different courts:

  • Ainsty.
  • Hickelton.
  • Ingram. 11 houses, A through K.
  • Irwin. 2 houses, A and B.
  • Lindley. 11 houses, A through K.
  • St. Lawrence. 26 houses, A through Z, with 10 rooms each.
  • Wood. 11 houses, A through K.
  • Younger. 11 houses, A through K.

Sevices

  • Halifax has its own social space in the former JJ's bar.
  • There is a laundrette in St. Lawrence Court, opposite houses A and B, with washing machines and dryers available.
  • There is also a small Costcutter convenience store just behind the Porters Lodge which is open from 8am to 8pm seven days a week.
  • Like all other colleges, Halifax has a computer room located in St. Lawrence Court between houses N and Z.

Social events

The Halifax College club night is Xtra, which began in February 2005. Xtra is extremely popular and considered to be one of York's main College events, along with Club D and Planet V.

It is complemented by Xtra Live, the weekly bar quiz in JJ's held every Sunday during terms and one-off events such as Blind Date and "Sketch Up". Xtra Live is the Halifax College live music night. It is held in JJ's every second Thursday during terms.

Xtra, Xtra Live, the Halifax Bar Quiz and one-off events are provided by the Halifax College Students' Association.
