Why Study History?

GCSE History informs you about the past. It's interesting - you get to find out about what the world was like in times gone by. What people did. Who governed them. Wars. Scandals. There's something for everybody. So much has happened in the history of this planet, there's bound to be something you'll like learning about. The exams are stimulating and make you think about the period of history in question; you can think about what it was like to be there.

Whatever the exam board, or the history you learn during you GCSE, History shows employes, colleges and universitys that you are a student with ability to work hard, great analytical skills and intelligence. It is liked for many causes, especially law, and can offer you many chances in the future. Taking GCSE history is not only interesting, its enjoyable and opens up many oppurtinites.

Course Format

The AQA B Modern History course consists of two written papers (45% and 30%, respectively) and an assessed coursework component (25%). The first paper focuses on European history during and around the two World Wars, as well as a section devoted to Britain's role during one of the said wars. The second paper looks at two specific countries' roles between the wars, such as the USA and Germany - looking at the political and social advances in the time. The coursework is two small investigations on two modern historical topics. At A-Level most boards offer a wide variety of possible periods to study, however choice may be severely restricted by what your school is willing to teach. Course structure can vary considerably between examining boards.

The Course

History as a university BA degree is an intellectually stimulating and rewarding one, although courses tend to demand lots of written work from you. You'd become proficient in transferable skills such as writing précis, abstracts, essay writing, and of course delving into top libraries - such as the British Library - and archives to research and learn about the period or topic you are studying. The first two years tend to gradually increase in difficulty and narrow in theme, and the third year will most likely require dissertations of you, and which will allow you to study one particular theme, topic, personality (or anything you can think of) whilst stretching your intellectual and writing capacities.
