If you’re a student from a European Union (EU) country applying for help with tuition fees in England you need to complete a paper application form. Find out how and when to apply, where to send your application form and what evidence you may need to send.
How to apply
If you're an EU student applying for help with tuition fees only follow these steps:
1. Complete an application form by the deadline
2. Send your application form to the Student Finances Services European Team
3. If needed, include any evidence with your application – for example, proof of identity
Check if you qualify for the same type of help as UK students. If you do, the application process is different.
When to apply – courses starting in or after autumn 2013
If you start your course in or after autumn 2013 you can apply for student finance as follows:
- full-time students - from April 2013
- part-time students - from summer 2013
When to apply – courses starting in or after autumn 2012
If you start your course in or after after autumn 2012 you can apply now (full and part-time students).
The deadlines for 2012/13 applications are:
- full-time students - up to nine months after the start of the academic year
- part-time students - up to six months after the start of the academic year
The deadlines for 2013/14 applications are:
- full-time and part-time students - up to nine months after the start of the academic year
Check with your university or college when your academic year starts as it’s not necessarily the first day of your course. It will either be 1 September, 1 January, 1 April or 1 July.

You should submit originals of one of the following with your application:
- EU national identity card
- original non-UK passport (don't send your passport if you'll need it to travel within two weeks)
You may also need to submit the following evidence:
- original Home Office documents - to prove refugee status or 'leave to enter or remain' status
- original national identity card, original passport or original birth certificate with a 'birth or adoption certificate form' - to prove you're an EU national or have a 'child of a Swiss national' status
- photocopies of your P60, contract or letter from employer, audited accounts, tax returns or a P45 - to prove European Economic Area (EEA) or Swiss national UK work details
If you send photocopies of your evidence and not the originals, copies must be certified by an official. You need to send the Certifier checklist form signed by the person who certifies your photocopies.
What happens after you’ve sent your application?
The Student Finance Services European Team will:
1. Confirm your application has been received
2. Work out how much (if anything) you’ll get
3. Write to you confirming how much you’ll get
4. Pay the money directly to your college or university
If your course, income or family circumstances change
Tell the Student Finance Services European Team if your course, income or family circumstances change as this can affect what you're entitled to. Full-time students can do this using form EUCO1. Part-time students should contact the Student Finance Services European Team.
If you're unhappy with the result of your application
It may be possible to have your application re-assessed. Contact the Student Finances Services European Team.
