Facilities

The Students’ Union is one of the main social centres for students, with a range of facilities including a bar, cafeteria and shop. The nearby University of London Union offers a restaurant, several bars, a concert venue, a state of the art gym and a pool.

Studying in Central London is a great opportunity to work in Europe's largest and most diverse city, offering world-class cultural, social and retail outlets on our doorstep. The West End is famous for its entertainment, and for students at the Institute it is all within walking distance.

Libraries

The Newsam Library is the most comprehensive in its field in Europe, containing over 300,000 volumes and a unique archive used by 12,000 visitors each year. Supplementing these print collections is a full range of electronic materials, including electronic journals, full text books and research databases.

IT and Computing

The Institute has up-to-date audiovisual and reprographic facilities, as well as a dedicated working space in which students can prepare learning and teaching resources in a variety of media formats. An equipment loan service is in operation, which supplies audiovisual equipment suitable for project and presentation work. A specialist media suite includes video editing, audio recording and photographic equipment.

For computing needs all students are registered with an email address for the duration of their course. This gives you access to the 118 PCs and 16 Macs publicly available for use by students.

The computers give access to a range of software including word processing, data management and analysis tools, presentation software, internet access and an assortment of schools software, some of which can be borrowed on CD. In addition to the networked computers available in the Institute, some facilities can be accessed via a portal which is available to wireless network users and remote users connected via the internet. The portal gives students access to internet services, network drives containing personal files and course materials and a range of e-journals subscribed to by the Institute.

Sports

Students can access the nearby University of London Union gym and pool, and a number of fitness and sports groups are also organised at the Institute.

Welfare

Services for students at the Institute of Education include disability support, counselling, Chaplaincy, health centre, nursery, careers service, additional academic support and a student welfare office.

Healthcare

The Gower Street Practice is the nearest London doctors' surgery to the IOE. [2]

There is also a NHS walk in centre in Soho.

Shops

The IOE is located in central London within easy reach of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road for all the main department and high street stores. The Brunswick Centre is also nearby and the Bloomsbury area has an array of interesting shops and cafes.

In the IOE main building, there is also the Student Union shop and John Smith's bookshop.

Restaurants

There is a wide range of restaurants to suit all pockets and tastes around the Institute. The Students Union also has a cafe, bar and coffee shop in the main building.

Banks

Branches of all the major banks can be found around the Institute building with many of them on nearby Tottenham Court Road.

Transport

There are 8 tube stations within easy walk of the Institute building. The closest rail stations are Euston and King's Cross/St Pancras:

• Holborn (Central and Piccadilly Lines)
• King's Cross and St Pancras (National Rail + Circle, Northern, Metropolitan, Piccadilly and Victoria Lines)

• Tottenham Court Road (Central and Northern Lines)
• Warren Street (Northern and Victoria Lines)

There are also good bus connections via Euston Road, Gower Street, Tottenham Court Road and Southampton Row.

There are a number of nearby car parks but there are no general parking facilities on any Institute site. The IOE is inside the Congestion Charging Zone.

Current IOE students can use the careers services provided by the University of London Specialist Institutions' Careers Service. [3]

Social

Bars, Pubs and clubs

The Students' Union bar is open until late during term-time and the nearby University of London Union also houses a number of bars.

There are also lots of bars and pubs around the area so you can find your favourite after class.

Events

The Institute hosts a wide range of events from seminars to conferences and public lectures on a range of topics in education and social sciences. [4]

Clubs and societies

There are a number of clubs and societies for students to join, centred around specific subjects or cultural groups and sporting clubs. The societies and clubs are run by students for students through the Students' Union.

Accommodation

IOE has a main hall of residence, John Adams Hall (which comprises the Endsleigh Street building and Endsleigh Gardens building) and three annexes - Bedford Place, Woburn Square and Gordon Square - within walking distance of the campus.

Accommodation for couples and families The IOE hall of residence and its annexes are able to provide accommodation for couples and families; accommodation may also be available in some of the University of London intercollegiate halls of residence. Students with families, especially from overseas, are advised to come alone in the first instance and to send for their families only when they have found permanent and suitable accommodation.

University of London Intercollegiate Halls of Residence (UoL) IOE full-time students are eligible to apply for accommodation in the eight University of London intercollegiate halls of residence. [5]

Architecture

The main IOE building at Bedford Way was designed by the eminent architect, Denys Lasdun in 1960 and the building was opened by the Queen Mother in 1977. The library moved into an extension of the building in 1992. The building is now Grade II* listed.

Local area

The Institute is located in the heart of Bloomsbury with a number of other universities and colleges, which makes for a great mix of shops, restaurants, cafes and theatres aimed at students and locals alike.

Teaching and research quality

In the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) Newly Qualified Teacher Survey (2008), 90% of IOE NQTs rated the overall quality of their training as good or very good.

According to the 2008 RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) results the Institute of Education, London (IOE) tops the league tables in education research in both quality and quantity. Across all subjects, the IOE's performance places it in the top 10 universities in the UK. (League tables taken from reports produced by Research Fortnight, a leading research publication.)
