Facilities

The Institute of Law is a 'boutique' law school, offering law teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to small numbers of students. A not-for-profit educational body founded in 2008 by Jersey’s former Bailiff (chief justice) Sir Philip Bailhache, in 2009 it launched the Jersey Law Course for lawyers seeking to qualify as advocates or solicitors in Jersey. Since October 2010, it has offered tuition to students enrolled for a University of London LLB degree through the International Programmes (formerly called the External System). A team of experienced academics from UK universities provide LLB tuition to first year students.

The Institute is based in Law House in St Helier, the capital of Jersey. As well as teaching rooms and a student common room, Law House is also home to the Island's law library.

Libraries

Law House accommodates Jersey's professional law library, which includes the range of books needed by students studying for a LLB degree. Law journals and other resources are also available online.

IT and computing

Law House has wi-fi and wireless printers in all teaching rooms. Students have access to a virtual learning environment.

Sports

The Institute does not organise any sporting activities itself but a wide variety of sports is played on the Island and students can be put in touch with relevant clubs.

Welfare

All LLB students will be offered a personal development planning programme (a regular meeting with the director of studies to monitor progress) and there is a mentoring scheme with local legal professionals.

Healthcare

Students from outside the Island (including from the UK) should ensure that they have private health insurance. Details of reciprocal health agreements are on the Jersey government website here [2]

The Institute is situated in the heart of St Helier which has all the shops found on a typical British high street. A Co-Op supermarket is 2 minutes walk away.

Restaurants

St Helier has a wide range of places to eat, including several funky coffee bars.

It's Jersey: there is a bank on every corner!

Transport

Within Jersey, a bus system serves most parts of the Island and many people cycle. Several airlines fly to and from the Island, with direct flights from airports including: London Gatwick, Bristol, Plymouth, Exeter, Bournemouth, Isle of Man/Gloucester, Birmingham, Southampton, Manchester, East Midlands, Liverpool, Stansted, and Paris. A route finder is available at [3]. Ferries operate to and from the UK and Jersey from Poole, Portsmouth and Weymouth.

The Institute is small enough to be able to treat every student as an individual. Career planning is part of the personal development planning programme that students are encouraged to engage with.

Social

For students looking for non-stop partying at university, the Institute is probably not the right place. If however you are looking for a smaller and quieter environment than the major UK law schools, then the Institute may be a good alternative if you prefer working in smaller groups, enjoy life in the countryside, like the beach, hanging out in cafes, and exploring historic sites.

Accommodation policy

The Institute helps students from outside the Island to find accommodation before they arrive. This can either be in approved lodgings with breakfast and evening meals provided or (if students want to share) in self-catering accommodation. Students will need to be in Jersey for about 30 weeks a year. There will be a month-long break in teaching at Christmas and Easter.
