| Medical School | Allow Resits? | Extenuating Circumstances Only? | Only if Applied There Previously? | Any Other Comments?
| Aberdeen | Yes | Yes | | We do not normally consider applicants who have achieved less than our minimum academic requirements or who are re-sitting their examinations to upgrade results unless very serious personal difficulties at the time of the first sitting can be demonstrated. To be considered, any serious personal difficulties experienced at the time of undertaking an examination must be declared at the time and validated immediately.
| Barts and the London | No | | | We do not consider applications from candidates who have retaken their ‘A' levels even if with exceptional extenuating circumstances.
| Birmingham | Yes | Yes | | Only those who have achieved less than our standard offer by a small margin the first time round may be considered if there are persuasive mitigating circumstances.
| Brighton and Sussex | Yes | | | Due the large number of applications that we receive at BSMS, we are only able to consider resits if the grades obtained are very close to those actually required for entry to the course. Our decisions on individual applications will of course be guided by the academic referee's predictions about the grades likely to be achieved after re-taking. Candidates re-taking qualifications who wish to be considered for BSMS entry must declare in their UCAS application the A level grades for which they qualified at their first attempt. However, we do not need to be informed if a candidate decides to attempt individual modules more than once within the initial two year period of study. Where there are clear and strong mitigating circumstances for the A2 year then the first attempt at the examinations may be set aside. The applicant’s resits will then be assessed as if they were the first attempt . Note that we will require formal evidence in support of any mitigation claimed.

| Glasgow | No | | | Resits for any qualification are not considered
| Hull York | Yes | Yes | | We don't normally accept results from resits taken in a third year of post-16 education. |
| Nottingham | Yes | Yes | Yes | We only consider re-sit candidates if they have already applied to us, and there are genuine extenuating circumstances which have affected their performance at A-level.
| Oxford | Yes | | | Applicants who have re-taken their qualifications are eligible to apply, but should bear in mind the following:
•The University of Oxford offers courses that are academically very demanding and aims to select those students who would best be able to benefit from the challenges they make; this is why we require students to demonstrate that they can cope with the workload of taking three full A-levels (or equivalent) in one sitting.
•Additionally, a large proportion of our applicants have passed (or are predicted to pass) A-levels at a high level at the first attempt.
Consequently, other things being equal, applicants who are re-taking their A-levels, whilst eligible, have on average a lower chance of being offered a place than those who are expected to obtain straight As at the first attempt.
Nevertheless, we recognise that students sometimes fail to achieve their potential on first attempt at school because of extreme circumstances beyond their control. We do take mitigating circumstances into account, as long as they are brought to our attention: a clear note should be made of these circumstances in the school reference.
| Peninsula | Yes | | | AAB in first attempt then A*AA/AAA.

| Southampton | Yes | Yes, if retaking more than one A level/GCSE | | Applicants who have retaken one A level and/or one GCSE (or equivalent) will be considered as if they had achieved the appropriate grade at the first sitting.
