Facilities

The Learning Center has several MAC and PC suites, as well as an extensive library. Opening hours are reasonable, with Sunday opening hours before university-wide deadlines and exams. The Trent Park campus is home to a listed building, the Manor House, which is home to some classes and a nice cafe. The Student Union also has a cafeteria (serving breakfast, lunch and some tea) and bar on campus.

Libraries

The libraries are small, but equipped with the essential books needed for the courses they offer. You need to be fast though, to avoid disappointment. There are computer facilities, offering PC and Apple MAC use, in the library. Staff is friendly and tours of the library, explaining the online library functions, are offered at the beginning of the semester (September and February)

IT and Computing

Extensive computer suites offer the use of Apple MACs and PCs for students. There are regular workshops, ranging from researching the internet to using iMovie or Photoshop on a MAC.

Sports

In the summer, the Park Lane campus offers a great out door pool. In addition, the university offers sports courses.

Shops

TRENT PARK CAMPUS is very isolated from the surrounding area of Enfield. Shops on the campus are limited to stationary and snacks. There are a number of university book shops on campus as well.

CAT HILL CAMPUS is equally isolated. If you take the shuttle bus from Trent Park to the station, you can access shops in Enfield (need to take a bus though, or walk a bit).

HENDON CAMPUS is located centrally and a short walk from campus means you are surrounded by a variety of shops and supermarkets, providing alternatives to campus food.

Restaurants

TRENT PARK CAMPUS

There are two cafés at the Trent Park campus, offering breakfast, lunch and snacks.

The café in the student union's building is open from 8.45am until 5pm during term time. The food is diverse, offering Halal and vegetarian options. There is also a student union bar, providing drinks. is open daily from 12pm to 11pm (12am on Tuesdays and Fridays). There are weekly events as well. The prices are reasonable for students and a variety of coffees are on offer.

The Mansion café is located in the Jebb building. It can be hard to find, so keep your eyes open or ask your way. Hot and cold dishes are served, with vegetarian options. The café opens at 8.30am for breakfast and serves lunch from 12pm. During term time the café is open from 8.30am until 6pm (3.30pm on Fridays) Trent Park campus is very isolated, so those restaurants offer the most convenient eating opportunity when spending your days there. There is a fish and chips shop at Oakwood station, which can be reached by taking the shuttle bus or in 15 min on foot.

Snacks, drinks and other goodies can be bought in the student union shop or at vending machines, which are located all over the campus (it is always handy to have some change available for that).

CAT HILL CAMPUS

There are two cafés at Cat Hill campus.

The café in the Charles Swinstead building (Madison's) serves hot and cold dishes, sandwiches, snacks and drinks (coffee, as well as alcoholic drinks). Students can lounge at the facility, enjoying music or playing pool. The NYCD counter also offers Halal and vegetarian options and opening hours are from 8.30am until 7pm (term time, 3.30pm during holidays). Breakfast: 8.30am - 10.30am, Lunch: 11.30am - 2.30pm, Alcohol: 11.30 - 7pm.

The Peter Green building hosts Café Direct, which offers cold and hot drinks, snacks and sandwiches. Open only during term time from 8.30am - 3.30pm.

If you get hungry or thirsty anywhere else on the campus, vending machines can be found everywhere.

HENDON CAMPUS

The cafés can be found at Hendon Campus.

The Atrium café offers drinks and snacks only. You are welcome to hang around and chat over a cup of coffee, but don't expect great snacks.

The Refectory offers some cold and hot meals. Some vegetarian and Halal options are available. It has a bit of a canteen feel to it though.

The Library Café is excellent for a cup of coffee or a refreshing drink when revising for an exam or doing research at the library.

The central location to the historic centre of Hendon means there are a lot of pubs, restaurants, bars and cafés in the area, just a short walk from the campus.

Banks

Trent Park campus has no banks, but a cash machine (NatWest) is close-by at Oakwood station.

Transport

TRENT PARK The nearest tube is Oakwood (Piccadilly Line). You can walk from there, but be careful during darkness. There is a university-provided shuttle bus, which gets very crowded at peak hours. Buses 121, 307 or 377 also go to Oakwood Tube station. The closest national rail stations are New Barnet or Enfield Chase.

CAT HILL CAMPUS The nearest tube is Cockfosters (Piccadilly Line) or Southgate tube station. The 289 and 299 buses provide an alternative to walking to campus. New Barnet station is the closest National Rail station. Bus 307 will take you close to the campus.

HENDON The 143 runs past the Hendon campus

Careers service

Part-time jobs

It is not hard to find part-time jobs in more central parts of London, but with a bit of luck you can find something in the Enfield area as well. Most students who live on campus will need to look outside the university. They don't offer many jobs.

Social

Bars, Pubs and clubs

All campuses offer bars and pubs, some with limited hours. The student union organises weekly events, including club nights. The area around Trent Park and Cat Hill is mainly residential, with few clubbing opportunities. Hendon campus is much luckier in this aspect. Central London can be reached within 30-45 min from all campuses, allowing you to experience London to its fullest extent.

Events

The student union arranges regular events, such as club nights.

Clubs and societies

There are plenty of societies, most of which can be joined at any time. Most students join a lot of them during fresher's week. The society council is always open to new society suggestions.

The following societies currently exist: - Adventure Racing - Christian Union - Complimentary and Alternative Medicine - Economics - Eureka Indian's Society - Handsome Devil Society - Hindu Society - International Cafe - Islamic Society (Hendon) - Islamic Society (Enfield) - Islamic Society (Trent Park) - Jewish Society - MDX Football Appreciation - MDX Writers Society - Modern Language - RESPECT - Sonic Arts - TCM - URBAN UNISEX

Teaching quality

As an ex-poly, the university still has little reputation, but is well known for their great drama and dance courses, as well as their teaching courses (PGCE and BA Primary Education). It also offers great Nursing courses and art-related degrees.

In 2004, Middlesex University was rated among the Top 20 Universities in The Guardian league tables, but considerably lower in the Times.

During the summer, Middlesex University offers a summer school, available to all students, as well as non-students.

During term, they offer a Languages for All option, where you can learn or continue to learn a number of foreign languages, including English for non-English speakers. Additionally, a lot of the degrees are set up to offer you one free module per semester in the first year.
