NUSThe National Union of Students is the main group of students unions in the UK. It was formed in 1922. It is supposed to represent the views of students and help student unions. A large number of unions are part of the NUS. However are notable number are not. Non affiliate UnionsA number of unions are not affiliated to the NUS. The most notable are listed below.
However, some have recently afilliated. NUS CrisisHowever it has faced several crisis in recent years. Financial CrisisThe NUS has been faced with a financial crisis for a number of years. Costs to run the NUS have spiralled whilst affiliation fees have fallen due to a number of high profile disaffiliations and falling block grants paid by universities to student unions. As a result, affiliation fees have risen with some unions having to pay £50,000. Many unions have faced falling incomes as alcohol no longer proves the money maker it once was as demands and expectation of the services that a union is expected to provide has risen. To solve this problem, the NUS launched an NUS Extra Card, which provides discounts for £10. Lecturers Boycotting ActionIn 2006, lecturers part of the AUT and NATFHE launched strike action, which involved boycotting marking of exams and coursework. The NUS supported the the boycott, which caused a large amount of disatisfaction amongst students and their union who claimed the NUS was not representative of their views. Some Unions went as far as threatening to withhold part of their affiliation fee. Discount CardsThe NUS offers two discount cards. See Also |
