FacilitiesLibrariesYou may think stepping in a library is an erstwhile affair; something you did with careless speed sometime near the end of your college studies but, with that chapter complete, and first year looming large, the library can be another one of those lofty rooms with much meretricious value but is uncompromisingly unfriendly to use. However, fitting in with the overall theme here at Newman, the library has something of the Golidilocks effect about it; it's just right. Essentially, there's always a desk free, placed thoughtfully overlooking some appealing view within Newman's grounds ( unless you pull the short straw and wind up sitting opposite a construction site). In contrast, the library is occupying temporary space and shall be relocating into the new build from September onwards, invalidating my previous description. Despite this, the real meat and potatoes comes from the necessity of using the library. YOU WILL NEED TO USE THE LIBRARY. Even if you plan on coasting through the uni year expending as little effort as possible, you will need to dip in to the archives from time to time. Fear not, loafers, you can browse the library catalogue from the comfort of your own home as Newman's collections are available to peruse electronically. With your ID card, you are also able to reserve and renew books from an online account, available to all students. As with anything, there are pitfalls but mercifully, the library staff are highly helpful and are able to correct any of your search and retrieve woes. [[ The General Library collection]] Accessible to you :) General reference materials; including dictionaries, encyclopaedias, directories and yearbooks Education reference materials; including various government and official reports and curriculum materials Pamphlets Audio-visual materials Journals collection Newman Library has an extensive collection of journals to support learning and teaching at Newman. Journals are an excellent source of information on your subject, and are important for research and keeping informed of professional changes and developments. Some are printed, some electronic only and some are available in both printed and electronic form. The printed journal collection can be found in the Journals room in the library. The collection is for reference only, so titles should be accessible in the library at all times. Use the Journals A-Z list to check which journal titles we hold. If you experience any problems finding the title you need contact a member of staff. If you need an article that we don't hold in the Library or have access to electronically, we may be able to provide it to you via our File:Http://www.newman.ac.uk/library/inter library.htm service. Many journal titles are available electronically, also called e-journals. To see a listing of e-journals or check for a particular title please check our Journals A-Z list. School Experience Collection All resources to support students on School Experience placements can be found in the School Experience Collection. The collection includes: Teachers' notes and lesson plans Music cds Cd-roms and software DVDs and videos Pictures and posters Topic kits Children's non-fiction Religious, historical and other artefacts All School Experience materials are available for a loan period of 6 weeks. See Borrowing Information for details of how many items you can borrow from the library. + my favourite room of all, the children's literature collection. The Library staff are in negotiations with the English Department to include more modules revolving around Children's literature and what is meant by this appreciably ambiguous term. Watch this space! The John Henry Newman Collection at Newman Library covers a wide range of Newman's own works, including letters, diaries, essays and sermons, as well as many works by other members of the Oxford Movement. Also included are secondary sources on the material, with other works on Catholic Theology, from early Patristic writings to more modern titles. The collection comprises approximately 500 books and pamphlets. For further details please see the library's John Henry Newman collection web page. Local history collection Covers every aspect of West Midlands history in a variety of different media, including photographs, maps, newspapers on microfilm, the 1871 Census for Birmingham, copies of archival material and 4,000 books and pamphlets. For further details please see the library's Local History web page. Newman may be small in size but it utilises it's space extremely well. In addition, most of these rooms double up as group study rooms although you do have to be quick; they are on a first come first serve basis and are not bookable so when walking by that empty room, you'll have no time to take it all in. Just grab a few chairs and hit the books! IT and computingInternet access is freely available across the campus. Super high speed connection it may not be, but whilst your waiting around in one of the many computer labs ( I've been there a year, it's a small university and I still don't know where all the computers belong - go figure) then it's always an idea to read over your assignment brief or any other extraneous bits of paperwork just so you know why you've settled down to tappity-tap. The reason I say this is that, if you don't want to start off on the wrong foot, then the best thing you could do is avoid idly screen gazing/ surfing facebook/ TSR, saving it for later instead. Unavoidably, there will always be someone who needs that computer more than you do, even more so if you just happen to be a space invading loafer. In fact, a computer would ALWAYS be available for those who need it if precious space wasn't taken up by the aforementioned swivelchairspuds. All of the computer labs are equipped, to my knowledge, with printers and scanners but all computers are adapted to support a wide range of electronic devices and applications. If you ask (nicely), you may also be able to get your hands on some free/ reduced software. It's good to befriend those on the IT Help Desk, as those are the ones who will be able to reactivate your account following the umpteenth 'access denied' warning. Also, if you live in halls, then you will need to see the techies early on for that all important wireless software implementation. You can also buy your USB sticks, amongst other electronic devices and media here at a reduced rate. The IT Helpdesk also offers telephone support (Tel: 0121 483 2293) and support via email: support@newman.ac.uk. The IT suites in the library build currently remain open til about 9 each evening although there were a lot of earlier closures this year - it's something you need to consult your newman webmail about. If in doubt, ask down at the security lodge. For example, if exams are looming they may stay open for longer. SportsPrintable version Sport Currently NSU has the following teams: Badminton – men’s and women’s Basketball – men’s and women’s Football – men’s and ladies Gaelic Football – men’s Netball – women’s Visit the Student Activities page on Newman's SharePoint (intranet system) once you have enrolled to see when sporting activities are held or alternatively, become a member on FB of the sport you wish to participate in. If your sport isn't listed, why not start up your own team. If you have an interest in another sport speak to the Sports Development Officer, Sarah Addly at the Freshers' Fair or throughout the year. If there is enough interest you'll be in a good place to add to the mix of teams already in existence. This is why all members of Newman are cordially invited to join in with allof the activities staged in, and beyond, the Chaplaincy. Saving the Chaplaincy, there's also a Multi-Faith Prayer room and a Quiet Room for reflection. The Chaplaincy also supports the Christian Union, Islamic Society and SVP Soc who meet regularly. Details of times and venues of their meetings and events are on the Chaplaincy notice boards around the University College. For more information please email m.holland@newman.ac.uk [[ Regular Activities]] Sunday 7:00pm Mass followed by Tea & Cake! Monday 8:30am Mass Tuesday 8:45am Morning Prayer Thursday 8:30am Mass and those are just the daily activities, with events being organised all year round. SocialBars, pubs and clubsEventsClubs and societiesAccommodationIn excess of 200 rooms, you are right in thinking that there aren't many rooms BUT there's more than enough room to go round and although rooms aren't guaranteed, most if not all first years who request a room will be granted their choice. PGCE's are given their own separate block ( B block), which is the more serene of the blocks. Newman halls are the ultimate in convenience living. Put it another way, you have to put some effort in if you want to miss lectures as everything is literally a stones skip away, classrooms included. Rooms are arranged on landings, with an option to live on a single or mixed sex landing, with up to 6 sharing the communal kitchens and bathrooms. Rooms are notably spacious and come equipped with an easy chair, desk and chair, security box, curtains, a hugggeeee cork board, tonnes of storage space, a hand basin ( and obviously a bed). Even kettles/ toasters are provided, plus bathroom cleaning equipment. Landings and bathrooms are cleaned regularly by the dedicated Housekeeping team but if you want to stay on the right side of your flatmates, then be sure to clean that shower out after you. Kitchens are your responsibility and again, no one wants to feed in a messy kitchen so do keep on top of the cleaning. Sounds obvious, but grime does have a way of insidiously multiplying from surface to surface. Oh, and you will be subject to frequent inspections; too many less than squeaky clean ratings and you will be charged with a fine. A bedding pack can be bought from Housekeeping upon arrival for £25, with £15 being refunded when returned at the end of the year in good condition. You will be issued with a letter of receipt upon collection of your bedding pack which you MUST KEEP HOLD OF if you want to see that precious £15 back in your pocket. Accommodation policyPersonally speaking, halls are well worth the money. The charges for 2011/12 are £3,350 for first year students per academic year for a standard room - this includes all heating and electricity costs and block possessions insurance cover. A limited amount of en-suite accommodation are available, with the rate for 2011/12 being £4,410. There is a limited number of rooms available in the on-site campus houses with the charge being £3,137 per academic year including utility costs and possessions insurance. En-suite rooms are usually reserved for exceptional circumstances only, so it is worth contacting the university beforehand to find out if you're eligible.
