 Glyndwr University was formerly the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education. It is based in Wrexham, North Wales and was granted university status in July 2008 to become the tenth university in Wales, though can trace it's history back over 120 years. Since 2003 the institution has been part of the University of Wales. It currently has around 8,000 students. FacilitiesLibrariesIT and ComputingGlyndŵr University has excellent computer facilities located close to where you need them within your subject or in the library and open access areas. A recent investment has expanded our WiFi wireless access across the whole campus. All our computers have full internet access. We will provide you with a wide range of other IT facilities such as your own email account, file storage, standard and specialist applications and printing facilities. We have 13 computer suites throughout the University. Most of these are for general open access use, although there are also a number of specialist IT labs for certain areas such as Computing, Engineering, and Art and Design. Glyndŵr University uses the latest technology to the full. We have a comprehensive student intranet containing a range of advice and guidance. Many of our courses' lecture notes and programme content are available online through our Virtual Learning Environment. Many study materials such as online databases, e-journals and library catalogue information are available online from our campus computers. They can also be accessed at home should you prefer to study there. IT Services provides convenient and effective help and advice on all aspects of computing including hardware, software and network access and use. You can also report faults with computing equipment connected to the University network. The IT Helpdesk in the library building (Edward Llwyd Centre) is the first point of call for all IT queries. SportsOur sports centre is situated at the heart of Glyndŵr University’s Wrexham campus. It is one of the premier sporting venues in North Wales and has hosted several major sporting events. We have two floodlit artificial pitches, one a water-based international hockey pitch and the other a sand-based pitch for football. Our indoor facilities include a 1000sqm wooden sprung floor, a dance studio, fitness suite and spectator areas. The centre runs a number of classes such as yoga, pilates, kickboxing and step, and supports the activities of a variety of sports teams playing hockey, football and basketball. The centre also offers healthy lifestyle packages to students wishing to improve their health through diet and fitness. The sports centre has grown since we first opened our doors. We now boast several sports development officers as well as close links with community clubs and the Glyndŵr University sports and exercise science team. Students studying on a full-time programme on the main Wrexham campus can apply for support through our innovative scholarship and bursaries scheme. WelfareGlyndŵr University offers a wide range of student support services to help you succeed during your time here. These range from welfare services, including healthcare provision and disability support, to practical services such as photocopying and e-learning. The focal point for many of these services is our Admissions and Enquiries team based in the Edward Llwyd Centre, which is also home to many of the support service teams. The team, are helped by our student ambassadors, so you’ll be dealing directly with students who have had the same questions and queries in the past as you may have. The team will point you in the right direction regarding questions on anything from finance issues to where things are around the campus. They can also put you in touch with individual departments should you need to speak to someone in more detail about a particular service. We also have two GP practices on site, both offering access to male and female doctors and providing a confidential service. Students may register with either of these practices or with one of the variety of other practices in Wrexham. The nurses run regular health promotion events throughout the year, beginning with the freshers’ fair. This event aims to give plenty of advice on healthy living, especially for those students living away from home for the first time. It also provides links to other health support groups. All Glyndŵr University students are encouraged to register with a local doctor (if they are not already living locally), which they can do at enrolment/induction. Due to the national shortage of dentists, students are advised to have a check-up with their home dentist before they come to university and to keep their own dentist throughout their time here. However, there are emergency dental services available in Wrexham should the need arise. AccommodationMost Glyndŵr University accommodation is either on campus or close by. The Student Village offers campus-based accommodation for those first year students who want to be close to all the on-site facilities. For those who prefer to be away from the campus there is also a range of University-managed student accommodation in Wrexham. Car parking is available at all University-owned accommodation, and laundry facilities are available on campus for students to use. For those looking for more independence there is always a range of private accommodation available to students in Wrexham. The Glyndŵr University Accommodation Service maintains a register of suitable properties for students. Although the tenancy contract is between the student and the landlord, the Accommodation Service can offer advice and guidance. RestaurantsBanksTransportCareers serviceThe Careers Centre at Glyndŵr University is designed to provide impartial and professional information, advice and guidance for students and graduates. This is a brief round-up of Careers services: •Careers advice: access to careers guidance interviews; make appointments to talk with a Careers Adviser and also EGuidance. •Jobshop: located in the Students’ Guild building, advertising graduate jobs, part-time jobs, vacation work, voluntary work, internships and placements. •Work experience placements: access to 6-10 week paid work placements via the GO Wales programme. •Work tasters: unpaid work tasters via the GO Wales programme. •Events: coach trips to graduate fairs; employer presentations and interviews. •Free CV and application checking service: have your CV or application form checked to make sure you are presenting yourself in the best possible way to employers. •Interview preparation: we can help on a one-to-one basis and also set up mock interviews. •Free computer and telephone facilities. •Extensive careers information library: with many reference files, guides, books, videos, free publications and leaflets. •Local newspapers with job vacancies. •Employment and opportunity preparation sessions. •Practice psychometric tests.
