Facilities

IT and computing

There are opportunities to access IT resources in the workshops, the Library, computer-teaching rooms, seminar rooms with networked terminals, and numerous computer terminals available throughout the different buildings. A centrally located Student IT Helpdesk provides advice and support for using the IT resources, including email.

Students' work can be output to a wide variety of media, including DVD, laser and large format inkjet printing on an extensive choice of papers and textiles. Complementary hardware such as high end scanners, digital cameras and DV capture workstations contribute further to a fully integrated resource for creative origination, manipulation and development of creative projects.

NUCA use Moodle for their Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). A VLE is an online electronic course management system which enables communication between students and staff.

Shops

NUCA has a shop selling a wide range of basic and specialist art and design materials at discounted prices. The University College is situated in the heart of the city centre in the lively cultural quarter. There are loads of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars literally on the doorstep. The Norwich Playhouse and Cinema City are also right next to the campus.

Gallery

The NUCA Gallery shows a variety of contemporary art. Each year the University College is host to EASTinternational which brings a number of distinguished artists to Norwich from all over the world.

Transport

Norwich University College of the Arts is situated in the heart of the city centre. Both the train and bus station are a ten minute walk from the main campus. Norwich is less than two hours away from London and one hour from Cambridge by train. There are trains to London every half hour. Norwich International Airport is only 4 miles out of the city centre. It has regular daily flights to Amsterdam. It also has a number of cheap flights to various destinations via budget airlines.

Careers service

The Careers Service provides support for all registered students as well as graduates for up to three years after graduation or for life if alumni members. The service offers personal advice sessions, workshops and in course training throughout your time in the University College.

The University College wants to ensure that students have the best possible chance of moving forward from a learning environment to a world of work or further study. The Careers Service is therefore committed to providing advice in the form of personal one on one sessions and workshops.

The Careers Service can help you decide on a particular career, prepare you for the transition to the working environment and can advise you on relevant skills and knowledge required to work in a commercial environment. It is located in the Duke Street Centre adjacent to the Library, Lecture Theatre, Student Union Office and a social area. The service recently attained the MATRIX standard, a national quality standard and one which will ensure that you receive a high quality overall service.

Part-time jobs

Part-time jobs are relatively easy to find. Being situated in the city centre many students work in pubs, clubs, shops, offices etc.

Social

Bars, pubs and clubs

Norwich has many clubs playing everything from 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, trip hop, hip hop, new skool, old skool, break beats, breakdancing, retro, funk, soul, swing, jazz, r 'n' b, reggae, alternative, indie, britpop, rock, metal to dance, chart, house, garage, techno and drum 'n' bass.

Norwich has always had a wide variety of live bands playing at venues such as the UEA, Waterfront, Norwich Arts Centre and Norwich Playhouse.

It is a fact of local amusement and unwarranted pride that Norwich used to have a pub for every day of the year. This may not be the case now, but it would still be hard to find a similar populated town or city with so many pubs and bars. So whatever your taste in drinking establishment you are sure to find what you want in Norwich. Real ale, theme bars, wine bars or the good old fashioned local - you won't be disappointed.

SU Bar

The magnificent timber beamed SU Bar has regular social events including performances, DJs, bands, themed parties and exhibitions.

The Student Union encourages students to get involved in participating and organising activities in the evenings and during the day. The bar provides a range of beers, wines, spirits, soft drinks, teas, coffees, light snacks and sandwiches.

Accommodation

BEECHCROFT, HOOPER LANE, OFF SPROWSTON ROAD, NORWICH

Beechcroft is a newly-developed halls of residence accommodating 77 students, a short bus journey from the College. Accommodation is in small corridors of between 4 to 10 bedrooms and each corridor has a fully fitted kitchen and dining area. There is either a bathroom or shower room in each corridor. There are extensive gardens with the property which can be enjoyed by the residents. Lockable bike racks are provided and there is limited car parking with priority given to disabled students.

The rooms are available for occupancy from early September. There is a £65 booking fee required to secure the room when allocated. Rents for 2008/9 are between £80 to £98 per week and are payable at the beginning of each term.

There is a key and damage deposit of £200.00 which will be payable upon signing the agreement. This deposit is returnable at the end of the academic year if the property is in good order.

Accommodation policy

The selection procedure looks at the distance students live from Norwich and we give priority to International students or those with any medical condition or disability who apply to us. The University College is extremely popular and of course we can not accommodate all students in our own accommodation and hence we also use rooms within the city as does our neighbouring university.

If you do not get allocated a room, our Student Support section is able to help you find shared accommodation with other students. An early application for accommodation is recommended.

Private sector

There is a plentiful supply of reasonably priced accommodation in Norwich. This includes rooms, flats and houses rented from private landlords. Our Student Support team are happy to help students find rented accommodation. The service offered includes:

Advice and Guidance at the University College's Open Days Weekly updated list of house/flat share accommodation with other students A brochure 'Living in the Community' produced in collaboration with UEA and City College Norwich Help and advice on tenancy agreements, disputes and deposits, maintenance and repairs and approved agents and landlords

The average price for accommodation in the private sector is between £50 and £60 per week excluding bills and the utility bills (gas, electricity and water) usually amount to between £5.00 and £7.50 per week. It should be noted, however, that such accommodation has not been vetted by the College and any agreement made between the student and the landlord will be a private agreement.
