The Oxford Access Scheme is an independent charity concerned with encouraging applications to higher education in general (and Oxford in particular) in areas of the UK where there might not be a strong culture of academia – such as council estates, ethnic minority communities, or inner-city schools.

In addition to school visits, the Oxford Access Scheme runs Summer Schools over the vacation in both arts and sciences. There are Tutor-Teacher Conferences where teachers from state schools are invited to discuss admissions with subject and admissions tutors here. These give tutors a chance to explain what they look for in candidates so teachers can prepare their students better, and enables teachers to ask tutors questions and explain about certain difficulties state school students may face so that tutors can take these into consideration when looking at application forms.

The Oxford Access Scheme also conducts a Shadowing Programme where sixth formers can spend a few days in Oxford with undergraduates and receive insight into the tutorial system and lifestyle here, as well as the differences between colleges. The Oxford Access Scheme publish the Diversity Prospectus and organise Interview Training and UCAS Form workshops to help students make the best of their potential.
